S-Class gets "bouncing" suspension

Mercedes-Benz continues to reveal details about the new generation of its S-Class flagship, which is scheduled to debut in the fall. In addition to the updated MBUX multimedia and navigation system, the luxury sedan also received a "bouncing" E-Active Body Control suspension (hydropneumatics), which is driven by a 48-volt unit.

This technology is used in the GLE and GLS crossovers. It changes the stiffness of the springs on each side individually, thereby counteracting roll. The system is controlled by 5 processors that process information from twenty sensors and a stereo camera in a split second.

Depending on the settings, the suspension can change the tilt of the car when cornering. The system also changes the stiffness of a particular shock absorber, softening the impact when driving over bumps. The highlight of E-Active is the ability to raise the side of the car with which an inevitable collision is recorded. This option is called PRE-SAFE Impuls Side and reduces vehicle damage while protecting the driver and passengers.

The list of options for the updated S-Class also includes rear wheel steering. This improves the sedan's maneuverability and reduces the turning radius to 2 meters (in the extended version). The customer will be able to choose one of two options for turning the rear axle - an angle of up to 4,5 or up to 10 degrees.

Additional upgrades for the Mercedes-Benz flagship include active blind spot monitoring with the MBUX assistant. It warns of approaching other vehicles from behind when the door is open. There is also a Traffic Assistant who provides an “emergency corridor” for the rescue team to pass.
