The largest energy storage device in the world is built in the USA. Featuring Tesla

US manufacturer and energy supplier Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) is building a giant 1MWh, 200MWh power storage. It will consist in part of Tesla megapackages with a total capacity of 300 MWh, expandable to 730 MWh.

The [next] largest battery in the world

When switching the economy from coal, gas or nuclear power plants, where the power can be smoothly regulated, to renewable energy sources, which can be quite capricious, it is necessary to take care of the storage of the energy produced. Various types of batteries are used for this, for example pumped storage plants, flow vanadium cells or simply Li-ion cells assembled into large batteries. PG&E uses the latter option.

The energy storage ordered by the energy producer will be launched in Moss Landing (California, United States) and will become the largest energy storage in the world. It is to offer up to XNUMX MW of power and the possibility of storing up to XNUMX MWh of energy, of which Tesla Megapacks will be responsible for XNUMX MWh of capacity and XNUMX MW of power (XNUMX%).

The construction of the entire system began in July XNUMX. The first Tesla Megapacks appeared at the location in October XNUMX. Now, at the end of February XNUMX, construction is still in progress - it is expected to end in the second half of the year. PG&E estimates that during the XNUMX years of operation, the energy storage will allow the company to save $ XNUMX million (the equivalent of $ XNUMX million).

To understand the scale of this project, it is worth adding that, on a beautiful and sunny day, all photovoltaic installations in Poland produced a record XNUMX XNUMX MWh of energy within an hour. So this gigantic energy store would fill up in less than XNUMX minutes. That is why electric cars are so important, which could play the role of mobile batteries in the future using the technology of two-way energy flow, VXNUMXG.
