The cheapest car got $4.5 million worth of trinkets

Tata Nano is inlaid with 80 kg of gold.

The Tata Nano is typically sold in India for the equivalent of around $2800 and was designed as an affordable "people's car" for the country's poorer population.

However, this one was encrusted with 80 kg of gold, 15 kg of silver and several million dollars worth of precious stones and pearls.

The car was unveiled by Ratan Tata, head of the giant Tata Group, which now also owns the British brands Jaguar and Land Rover - and apparently enough cash to invest heavily in their future development.

The car's design was selected from three finalists through a public poll, with the winning design receiving over 2 million votes.

The car has been adorned by Indian jewelery chain Goldplus and is on display at Mumbai's Tata Theatre, but from there it will embark on a six-month tour of India.

No doubt this will bring radiant joy to the underpaid in some poor areas.
