Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDI (74 kW) Stylance (5 doors)

For nearly 22 years, he has also invited Seat's Ibiza, a small city car with a distinctive look. In this edition, for several years now, it has been subjected to technological control, which, despite the recent renovation, is clearly visible - in internal (but also external) dimensions. Meanwhile, competitors have already grown and outgrown.

The poor? Not in principle. Smaller interior dimensions than competitors do mean less space, but also more comfortable exterior dimensions - in parking lots, in the garage and on the road. In this case, it is difficult to talk about absolute minus or dignity.

What really impresses me the most about Ibiza is (in this case) an old acquaintance - the engine. This 1-litre TDI with XNUMX-valve technology is indeed less powerful than the more modern XNUMX-litre TDI group with XNUMX-valve technology, as well as a noticeably diesel engine overall, but it's undeniably friendlier than it is.

This may seem even more pronounced, because such a ready-to-run Ibiza weighs 1140 kilograms on the scales, but it is true: the Ibiza pulls with it from idle and on, which means that starting is easy and - when necessary. – You can also quickly start the car without cranking the engine at high speeds. The engine power is then continuously increased, which can be controlled in both extreme cases by metering the gas to the pedal: for a quiet, relaxed ride and for a brisk, dynamic ride. The decision is up to the driver.

The five gears in the transmission don't seem (already) state of the art, but it's really enough thanks to a good engine. A sixth would be welcome to lower the revs (and fuel consumption) at top speeds (thus the Ibiza is cruising around 200 kilometers per hour at 3.800 rpm in fifth gear), but of course only if the driver will drive predominantly on highway - and boldly. over speed.

The drivetrain, including the shift mechanism all the way to the gear lever, also proved to be excellent, which is one of the best in the group. Together with the engine, albeit an “old” turbodiesel, this Ibiza is thus a very good combination: for urban “jumping”, for sightseeing trips or for rubbing tires in tight turns; Almost all parts of the mechanics, including the chassis and the rather short wheelbase, make it easy to fulfill such wishes.

In an Ibiza like this, the sports seats are low and the seats hold well from the sides. However, the years of Ibiza are best known in the interior: the shape is attractive from afar, a little less close and even more (or not?) Disturbed by the colors of the interior. The lower two thirds of the cockpit are finished in black and dark gray, which kills most of the dynamic interior design.

The materials inside (the plastic of the dashboard) are significantly improved to the touch, the headlight button seems uncomfortable, but from the point of view of usability, you can't blame, the audio system turned out to be much better than it promises, and VAG also has cars with more beautiful, clear and less kitschy instruments. The workmanship is very good, the interior works compact and the sports mechanics of the plastic steering wheel impressed us the least.

There is one more small drawback: the door mirrors are positioned too low (parking!). Despite the sufficient space, the clock, outside temperature data and the on-board computer (otherwise accurate) are combined on one screen, the middle slots on the Dashboard are interesting from a design point of view, but whatever one may say, they always more or less blow from the head of the front passengers and the filler cap can only be opened with a key.

However, and thanks to the still excellent mechanics, such an Ibiza is (still) still relevant. Perhaps it's just a little embarrassing to be ranked among the price competitors. But that's up to home analysts and customers.

evaluation

  • All in all, it can't be judged, but the Ibiza as a 1.9 TDI Stylance is a pleasant and nimble car that satisfies both calm and quick-tempered drivers. Its best part is definitely the mechanics.
