Seat Leon Cupra 2.0 TFSI (177 kt)

If we take a quick look at its ID, we find that it was powered by a turbocharged 1-liter engine with 8 Nm of torque and 280 kW (155 hp) and a six-speed gearbox handled the drivetrain. Manual Transmission. The car basically weighed 225 kilograms, which, according to the factory data, was enough to accelerate from standstill to 1.320 kilometers per hour in 100 seconds, as well as the speed that pushed the counter hand to 6.

The new Leon Cupra has grown. It has become longer, wider and taller. As well as harder. But for only 15 pounds. But he has a new engine. State-of-the-art (direct injection) 2-liter supercharged four-cylinder (TFSI) engine with enviable power and torque characteristics. The factory promises a whopping 0 kW of power and 177 Nm of torque, which (still) power the front wheelset. The six-speed transmission remains unchanged, only the reverse gear has been recalculated, which now has a longer gear ratio.

You do not have to guess for a long time that Cupra is standing in front of you, and not an ordinary Leon. More aggressive front and rear, and 18-inch five-spoke titanium-colored wheels are bold enough that you don't miss it. If you already have it, you will replace it with “FR”, but it is also different from this model. The Cupra has black mirrors and a mid-section of the front bumper, and red brake calipers are attached. There is much less uncertainty inside. Aluminum pedals and left footrest, a three-spoke sports steering wheel and, above all, the distinctive black shell-shaped Recar front seats with red stitching, instantly dispel any doubts. Those who know like-minded brothers (Audi S3 and Golf GTI) will find that the plastic parts in the Leon are smoother to the touch and (at least externally) of lower quality than the other two, but that doesn't depend on GT junkies. should be alarming. Racing interiors and superior engine performance make the difference. And Seat has taken great care of that.

The sound of the engine is disappointing. When you turn the key and hear the sound coming from the tailpipes, the factory-promised performance starts to be questionable. The sound is muffled, mediocre, as is the device, if you forgive it. Friendly, calm and cultured. It only shows its true colors when you fully press the accelerator pedal. Then the turbocharger breathes in full breath and begins (also thanks to direct injection) to pull sharply from the lowest operating range. In addition, it is so continuous that it can be easily replaced with atmospheric aggregates. The shock typical of turbocharged engines is virtually nonexistent. It is only when you release the pedal and press it again that you find that the engine reacts slightly differently to "atmosphere." However, it takes a few seconds for the turbocharger to take a full breath.

Since it is forced to charge, it does most of its work up to 6.400 on the rev counter. The red rectangle starts there too. But if you are persistent, it will spin up to 7.000 rpm without any problems. The steering wheel is precise and communicative. Racers only want more directness. It's the same with the gearbox, which has the tinge of too long lever movements. However, we have no comments on the location on the road. It is excellent and completely neutral for a long time due to the good chassis and wide tires (Pirelli P Zero Rosso 225/40 ZR 18). The fact that there are many "horses" under the hood is evidenced only by the yellow flashing light indicator ESP between the sensors, which, if you do not turn it off, will constantly actively participate in your trip. But don't feel it. It's another matter when you turn it off. During this time, the drive wheels begin to idle with normal acceleration in first, second or third gear. In corners, it becomes more unsettling when the inner wheel starts to lose contact with the ground and Leon can no longer show his best.

Well, we are there again. Those who buy GT cars because they want (and also know how) to use their full power are missing out on one feature. Differential lock. And sooner or later they will have to offer this to the manufacturers of such "machines". If not standard, then at least in the list of surcharges.

evaluation

  • Undoubtedly, Seat also proves with its new generation Leon that it is very clear to him what is hidden behind the GTI car label. The new Leon is even better than its predecessor, even more powerful, faster and, above all, even more useful. This goes for both the interior and the engine, which knows what to expect from it, behaves very meekly and nothing crazy.

We praise and reproach

engine performance

position on the road

ESP work

(almost) racing interior

driving position

anemic engine sound

too small straight steering wheel

(too) long movements of the gear lever

no differential lock
