Like the rest of the United States, drivers in Puerto Rico can apply for a Real ID driver's license for the first time or at their next renewal.

As of May 3, 2023, all U.S. citizens who wish to use their license, the only ID that meets federal security standards. In Puerto Rico, laws will require this type of identification for the same purpose, as well as granting access to federal facilities (military or nuclear).

1. Collect all requirements and necessary documentation.

2. Request an appointment at your local Driver Services Center (CESCO) office.

3. Visit the CESCO office with the required documents on the day of your appointment.

4. Submit receipts and wait for the required time to receive the document.

What documents are required to obtain a Real ID in Puerto Rico?

To meet all federal requirements for these licenses, Real ID applicants in Puerto Rico must provide the following documents:

1. Puerto Rican birth certificate or passport.

2. Fill out the application in pen and legibly.

3. Request a referral from a doctor authorized to practice in Puerto Rico. This certificate cannot be older than 12 months.

4. Request a DTOP-789 certification from an ophthalmologist or optometrist (you must complete this requirement only if your license is in the heavy vehicle category).

5. Original social security card (do not laminate). If you do not have one, you may also file the original Form W-2 Payroll and Tax Statement.

6. Confirmation of the fiscal address with the issuance of no more than two months. For example, an electricity bill, a telephone bill, a water bill, or a bank statement. If you are not the owner of the home, you must fill out a form or send a letter with the full name, address, and phone number of the homeowner, as well as a current copy of their ID.

7. Domestic tax voucher for $17.00, code 2028.

8. Stamps of the Internal Revenue Service with a face value of 11 dollars. If your license has expired for more than 30 days, the IRS stamp must be $35.
