The system works without changes
A flat tire is not always replaceable. Even in this case, the driver may not even notice the difference that he is riding on a tire that has some kind of cavity. Such tires are run flat tires, which are constructed differently from conventional tires. They can be driven without air, although their range is then limited, and they can move at speeds up to about 80 km/h. The best run flat tires allow you to cover a distance of 80 to 200 km after damage. This is a sufficient distance to get to the nearest workshop or even to the driver's place of residence.
Run flat tires are not really a new invention as they have been in use since 1987 when Bridgestone introduced the Run Flat Tire used in the Porsche 959 sports car. These tires can be constructed with a special rubber insert that absorbs pressure loss in the tire, or a reinforced tire base that fits snugly against the rim. The tire can be stabilized with a support ring and then we are talking about the PAX system, invented by Michelin.
PAKS system
In 1997, Michelin invented the PAX type tire, which is currently used, among others, in the Renault Scenic. Inside the PAX tires, special rings are mounted that act as a support. It prevents the tire from sliding off the rim after a puncture.
