Wood sanding: which wood sanding machine to choose?

Even though grinders are designed for similar purposes, it's almost impossible to do everything with one model. Therefore, there are several different types on the market. Find out how to choose a good wood sander!

How to sand wood?

Depending on the size of the object, the surface and the amount of damaged coating, different types of tools are used for removal. The base product is wood sandpaper, which can be placed on the rotating head of electrical appliances or taken in hand and rubbed by hand. Hand sanding is especially necessary when processing wooden sculptures (with scissors) and where other equipment is not available. Manual processing is also possible thanks to special abrasive cubes and sponges, as well as grinding trowels.

For people who do not choose a special wood product, a cordless or corded drill/driver may be a good solution. The sanding disc is placed in its mounting bracket, and the grinding discs are attached to it with Velcro or a clip. These are good tools for simple sanding jobs, as they usually have adjustable speed to allow efficient cleaning.

Some grind wood with an angle grinder. In the hands of amateurs, this is dangerous because it can damage the surface and form pits that will then be difficult to remove. In addition, such devices are very powerful and, in combination with inept grinding, can shoot out of the hand.

Wood grinders - types of devices

There are 5 different types of power tools that can be used on wood surfaces. These are the shredders:

  • wavering,
  • eccentric,
  • ribbon,
  • angular,
  • deltas.

The main characteristics of each of the most popular solutions are briefly described below.

Oscillating wood sander - specifications

This tool is considered one of the most versatile in amateur and semi-professional use. The heart of the equipment is an inflexible shield that performs both rectilinear and circular motion. The oscillating wood sander is therefore ideal for sanding wooden surfaces such as doors or furniture.

Also, a device that forgives the lack of skills. It is very easy to feel the pressure that needs to be applied to the workpiece. It is also easy to keep the direction of movement of the machine. Unlike angle grinders, orbital sanders don't tend to go out of line and fall out of hand.

An interesting example of the above type of equipment is the GRAPHITE 59G324 orbital sander. It is equipped with a 220W motor, which allows you to effectively sand wood and occasionally clean other materials such as metal. In order to improve work efficiency, it has a quick-change sanding paper system. It's a well balanced tool so you don't have to use it with both hands.

Random Orbital Sanders - Features

It might be tempting to say that this device is very similar to the vibrating wood grinder mentioned earlier. In this case, the wheel is usually round and performs a rotational and oscillating movement, thereby increasing the surface to be machined. The difference is seen in the more flexible disc, which allows you to not only grind hardwoods, but also polish other materials without damaging the material.

The representative of the described type of device is the BLACK & DECKER KA199 eccentric sander with a power of 240 W. It features a very good handle profiling, which means it can be securely gripped in a variety of ways. The implemented dust bin helps to keep clean while working, so there is no need to cover everything in the workshop or work outside. The Velcro backing plate allows you to quickly change the sanding sheet.

High performance belt sander - what is it for?

This type of device is slightly different from the two previously described. A wood belt sander is primarily used for cleaning and sanding large surfaces. When used by hand, it is suitable mainly for flat wooden elements without bends, recesses and corners.

Belt models also require more skill to operate than their oscillating or eccentric counterparts. They only move in a straight line, which forces the user to understand how to operate the device.

Tapes can be used for more than just sanding wooden elements. They are also very good at sharpening knives and other metal cutting tools. To ensure the desired effect, install the fixture in a specific holder (desk vise works well) so that it does not move when pressing on the element to be sharpened.

Sanding wood with belt equipment can be done with a WORKSITE BSD134 sander with a connection power of 1010 W. It has a variable belt speed in the range of 120-380 m/min. As a result, an effective finish of wooden elements is ensured. The weight of the device is 4 kg, which makes it very stable during operation.

Wood grinders and food method

Just as there is no single universal device for all grinding jobs, so there is no single way to power them. It should be recognized that network models are very popular and provide high power devices. However, they are quite loud, which can be disturbing, especially indoors.

Another solution is battery equipment. Especially those equipped with brushless motors run quietly and efficiently. However, it is not always possible to perform work on a single battery charge. For those with a compressor, a pneumatic wood sander can be a solution. It is characterized by a large power reserve, silent operation and low failure rate. The disadvantage is the need to have a long air supply hose.

As you can see, the choice of devices is huge and the purchase decision should be made taking into account your needs and personal preferences.
