CV joints are used in front wheel drive vehicles. The articulation connects the drive shaft to the wheel journal.

This allows the transmission of torque from the gearbox and wheel control at the same time.

If there was a rigid connection between the road wheel and gearbox in a front-wheel drive car, the driveshaft would break. The hinge is covered with a rubber, usually conical cap that contains a supply of lubricant. During operation, the tightness of these covers should be monitored to prevent the penetration of grains of sand.

Accelerated wear of the hinges is affected by incorrect driving technique, for example, hard acceleration with the front wheels turned out.
