Soundproofing a car with your own hands - video. Doors, hood, arches, etc.

Noise and vibration are constant companions of the motorist. It is impossible to completely get rid of them, but there is a way to minimize the degree of their influence.

Noise isolation with the help of noise and vibration-absorbing materials will give you the opportunity to protect yourself from unnecessary sounds that not only prevent you from feeling comfortable in the car, but also distract you from the driving process.

Noise insulation is also thermal insulation, it protects the interior from the penetration of cold from the outside, which should also be taken into account in our climatic conditions. Thanks to this protection, you will have to spend less energy on interior heating. At the same time, soundproofing materials are designed in such a way that they easily let in excess heat, and in summer it will not be too hot in the car interior.

Soundproofing can be an integrated - that is, the whole car is pasted over with sheets of soundproofing material - and Partial.

The following elements need protection the most:

  • doors - protection from street noise and cold;
  • trunk - vibration protection, and this problem is relevant for hatchbacks and sedans equally;
  • roof - the roof has a large area and even small vibrations are greatly amplified and a high level of noise is created;
  • hood cover, engine compartment, partition between the engine and the passenger compartment - vibrations constantly come from the engine compartment, which spread throughout the car body;
  • wheel arches.

And of course, the floor of the car needs soundproofing, because it is on it that all vibrations from the suspension are transmitted.

Noise insulation materials

As we already wrote, soundproofing has three main goals:

  • protection from noise;
  • vibration reduction;
  • heat insulation.

The editors of the portal Vodi.su recommends paying attention to those materials that are now available for sale in a wide range.

However, any material has its direct purpose:

  • sound absorption - porous materials based on polyurethane foam or polyethylene (Accent, Isoton, Barrier, Splen, Vibroton), they are designed to protect against ordinary noise propagating through the air;
  • vibration absorption (BiMast, Bomb, Standard, Vibroplast, Vizomat and others) - sheet materials based on bituminous mastic, convert vibrations into heat, absorb the energy of interaction of conjugated (rubbing against each other) elements;
  • gasket materials (Bitoplast, Madeleine) - eliminate squeaks that occur during friction of mating parts.

These materials have a number of positive qualities, which will fully manifest themselves only if sound insulation is carried out correctly and the instructions are followed.

There are also modern multilayer materials - sealants, which combine all of the above qualities, and they can be used for noise and vibration isolation without resorting to the use of intermediate layers.

Do-it-yourself car noise isolation

The whole process consists in pasting over the internal metal surfaces with sheets of noise and vibration absorbing materials.

All work can be divided into several stages:

  • preparation - we prepare surfaces for gluing insulation;
  • material preparation - cut out pieces of material of the desired shape;
  • applying soundproofing.

Preparation includes the removal of all upholstery materials and surface treatment - they need to be cleaned of dirt, dust, rust, and also degreased.

Preparation of noise and vibration absorbing materials - at this stage, pieces are cut that correspond to the shape of certain elements of the body. Usually, shapes are cut out of cardboard first, and then they are applied to sound insulation and cut out along the contours.

Application of sound insulation — direct pasting of internal surfaces. It is also produced in a certain sequence, depending on your goals. If you want to carry out a complete soundproofing of a car, you usually start from the roof.

Soundproofing sheets are good because they have an adhesive base, you just need to heat it up with a hair dryer and carefully stick it to the ceiling.

In the process of work, you need to ensure that the material lays down evenly, bloating and bubbles do not form. For the best result, sheets of material are rolled out using pressure rollers.

First, vibration-absorbing material is glued, and then noise insulation is applied on top of it..

Large areas, such as the floor or roof, are best covered with a single sheet. When you start pasting the floor, you need to remove all floor coverings, especially carefully approach the sound insulation of the wheel arches and the engine compartment on the driver's side - if you use a double layer of vibration isolation in this case, then your passengers will only thank you.

Soundproofing doors is also very important, although you will have to completely disassemble them by removing the decorative trim. The material should be glued in such a way that it does not block the drainage holes. In the same way, soundproofing of the hood and trunk lid is carried out - pieces are cut out that repeat the relief of the recesses of the hood and trunk, and soundproofing material is glued on top.

When the whole car is pasted over, you need to leave it in a heated, warm place for 10-20 hours so that the adhesive base “grabs”.
