Seat Exeo 2.0 TSI (147 kW) Sport

Seat is the sportiest marque of the Volkswagen Group, but so far it has not included a (dynamic) upper-middle class sedan in its sales program. Audi has a traditional focus on comfort and luxury, although you don't want to see any "es" (S3, S4, etc.) in your rearview mirror when driving in the fast lane on a German highway.

Not to mention the exclusive R8. If we look at the number of kilowatts hidden under the individual hoods, the Seat's sportiness dims quite a bit.

Then they introduced Exe. Seat's new product is expected to fill a gap in the sales program while emptying Audi's warehouses a bit, because - not at all hidden in the Volkswagen Group - it's just a previous-generation Audi A4 in disguise. Outside, some Seat moves have been added to it, and inside, a steering wheel with a Spanish logo, and it is expected that the novelty will continue to satisfy customers, especially with its favorable price and proven technology.

In our test, we had the sportiest version that boasted a two-liter turbocharged engine that sounds like the TSI label. It is expected that 147 kilowatts or about 200 "horses" will revive the resurrected deceased along with the dynamic driver Seat. You know, auto-emotions are primarily related to emotions, emotions. And Seat should once again have a car that will carry sportiness in its blood. This is not the case.

A powerful motor that spins effortlessly up to 7000 rpm, although a thousand less is enough for normal operation, when in fact the red bezel on the tachometer fires up, the shell seat and sports steering wheel are not enough to put a sports seal on this seat. ... While it boasts sporty equipment in its name and even a sporty chassis as accessories, it carries the thirsty driver through the water.

The Seat Exeo Sport is less of a strenuous sportsman and more of a restless young tie as a dynamic business sedan. Of course, Seat knows how to make sports cars, so Exe compromised and installed only a jump drive and some sports equipment, since there was not enough time for a major overhaul (fine tuning). Well, most likely mostly money, although they made it in just 18 months. So in no case do not expect too much dynamism, too many "emotions".

Perhaps, thanks to the calm Audi sedan, it would have been better with a turbodiesel? For sure. After all, Seat already boasts that the Exeo is very popular as a company car (the official car of 2009 in Germany, chosen by Firmenauto magazine and the German organization DEKRA), and they are wisely silent about sportiness. The engine, seat and steering wheel alone are no longer enough for a good sports car, because Seat knows them well too.

Thus, we may at first find that the engine is excellent, if we do not notice the high fuel consumption even with a quiet ride and some hesitation when starting off smoothly, which is especially disturbing in city traffic. Shell-shaped front seats are good if your better half can hug you around your waist, as the side supports are more suitable for dry people than fat ones ... hmm. ... not dry drivers. And the steering wheel falls into your hands, as if you were born with it.

It also boasts a small sports airbag and discreet buttons and rotating levers that control the radio and phone (bluetooth). At this, as already mentioned, sportiness ends and comfort comes. There is enough equipment, but the materials in the interior are even more impressive. First of all, the dashboard is a pure Audi copy, so the keys are comfortable, beautiful and create a premium feel. You won't get that cheap plastic feel that is the Achilles heel of the other seats in this car.

Simply put: cover the steering wheel decal and you will see that even Audi owners will not find themselves sitting in a Seat. In our opinion, it was on the inside that the Exeo made the most progress compared to the other seats, as we weren't sure if the impact was full or just an emergency exit. Despite the aggressive tailpipe trim that ends at both ends of the rear end of the most powerful Exe, while the other versions have two tailpipes on the left, black windows and a large 17-inch alloy wheel ...

That the Exeo is a thoroughbred Audi is also confirmed by the long clutch pedal travel (huh, but they can't hide it) and the precise but slow six-speed manual transmission. Multitronic's auto-switching mode is expected to have to wait until at least the end of the year and is expected to be available only in version 2.0 TSI. If we take comfort in the fact that the Exeo isn't an athlete, just a faster business sedan, then the sports chassis doesn't get on your nerves either.

The multi-link front and rear axles are stiffer, which is especially noticeable on paved roads, but they are not finished enough to prevent the car from leaning over and losing traction when cornering more dynamically. Of course, you can talk about a compromise, so do not brag about mountain serpentines too much, because some (even malnourished) Leon will eat you for breakfast.

Thanks to the standard Servotronic (speed-dependent power steering), the steering system is quite gently indirect in parking lots and definitely direct at higher speeds, but this addition is again standard on the 2.0 TSI only.

You won't be disappointed with the equipment, as the Exeo has six airbags (with seven knee airbags in other markets), standard automatic two-channel air conditioning (which works great even in the harshest summer heat!), ESP switchable stabilization system. copied from audi and transparent trip computer and cruise control. We recommend the hands-free system as an accessory.

The closed cooling box in front of the front passenger, the insulated windshield and tinted rear windows will be appreciated by all passengers, including children, who can attach them using the Isofix mounts. There is 460 liters of space in the boot, which can be increased by a folding rear bench in a ratio of 40: 60.

The trunk is mostly nicely designed, fitted with four anchors and a 12-volt cooler bag slot, the only black dot being the grungy top that Audi (oops, sorry, Seat) isn't exactly proud of. For a liter more, you will have to wait for the station wagon version with the ST marking.

The more we think about the Exe, the more we get the feeling that the decision will be made by Audi owners and not Seat owners, as the driving experience is also more German than Spanish. Well, at least those Audi fans who aren't burdened with brand and prestige.

It goes without saying that the Seat Exeo is the cheapest Audi and one of the most expensive seats. But if you go for a better version like the 2.0 TSI with some accessories, the offer for the money is already diversified.

The Škoda Octavia RS or Renault Laguna GT are already serious competitors, not to mention the more powerful Mondos, Mazda6 or, last but not least, the Passats.

Face to face: Dusan Lukic

“Exeo – first seat or just an (old) Audi in disguise? It's hard to say, but it's definitely a car that Seat desperately needs to offer. And since the previous A4 was already a bestseller at Audi's price point, and the Exeo is right up there with the Seat's price point, there's no doubt that it will appeal to many people - especially those looking for a spacious, affordable and technically proven vehicle."

Overall rating (312/420)

  • With Exe, Seat has achieved a lot. Especially in the interior, where you feel like in an Audi A4. But with more advanced equipment and powerful engines, its price also rises. Therefore, the Exeo is considered one of the most expensive seats, but still the cheapest Audi.

  • Exterior (9/15)

Quite attractive and recognizable, although it is similar to the previous Audi A4.

  • Interior (94/140)

Good ergonomics (including the cons of Audi), very comfortable materials and adequate equipment.

  • Engine, transmission (54

    / 40)

A nimble, albeit thirsty engine and relatively soft chassis. Except for the engine, no mechanical assembly of a car deserves the Sport badge.

  • Driving performance (56

    / 95)

If you want a fast sedan that feels right at home on the highway, the Exeo is your choice. For cornering, however, we would like a better chassis.

  • Performance (30/35)

I think few people will be disappointed with both the acceleration and the flexibility and top speed.

  • Security (35/45)

It has everything that is standard on such sedans, but it lacks active cruise control, blind spot warning systems ...

  • Economy

Consumption is a big minus of this car, and the price is only in the middle. That's why it has a great warranty!
