Seat Ibiza SportCoupe 1.6 16V Sport

If you consider the three-door Ibiza to be simply a more daring design departure from the five-door, you are well on your way to falling in love with it. However, if you also want to satisfy your driving ambitions with the SC, the Spanish woman will lead you through the creek hungry for motorization, which is currently listed on her price list. Engines 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 (petrol) are not units that would impress with sportiness. For turbo diesels (1.4 and 1.9), the story is even less exciting.

Where is the 1.4 TSI with 125 "horsepower" from Leon, which would take care of real entertainment only on a solid heavy Ibiza SC? The idea of two different cars with the same but tuned base is certainly welcome, as Seat is pursuing two types of customers: the first one, which will park an Ibiza in its garage due to its family orientation (with a large trunk and four meters in length. a completely usable car for a small family), while others are attracted by its sportiness (more rigid chassis, less usability of the three-door body).

Seat decided to emulate Opel's idea of two different cars with the same base, except that the three-door Ibiza is much more special compared to the five-door Corsa compared to the five-door, which has both. Advantages and disadvantages.

The main drawback of the three-door Ibiza is the rear bench: access to the three rear seats (the middle part is used only conditionally due to the step at the feet) is difficult due to one pair of doors, moreover, the conclusion returns to a position that drivers do not know about) with equipment Reference and Sport pay an additional 155 euros.

Only children will feel good in the back, because adults quickly bang their heads against the ceiling due to the lower roof, and riding their heads “on the roof” is not very pleasant because of the stiffer chassis ... knee room, which is enough in the back only if if a person of average height is sitting in front of him.

The coupe tax (SC is 17 mm lower and 18 mm shorter than the five-door Ibiza) also affected the luggage compartment, eight liters less than the five-door Ibiza, which does not significantly reduce its relative usability. The back bench divides in one third and expands: the seat tilts forward, the backrest folds down, creating a stepped trunk.

The lack of other side doors makes it difficult to remove the rear seat, and gray hair is also caused by opening the tailgate with the Seat sign raised, where you will always get your fingers dirty. Sitting in front, you won't notice the difference between the three- and five-door Ibiza. There is enough space in front, the front seats in the Sport configuration are excellent without exaggeration.

The large door is awkward to open due to an internal hook that sits next to the A-pillar, and the generous lateral support of the front seats makes it difficult to get in and out of tight parking spaces. In addition, thanks to the height-adjustable driver's seat (the passenger "Easy Entry" is also height-adjustable) and the depth- and height-adjustable steering wheel, the driving position is excellent.

Errors (classic), too long clutch pedal movement, there are also problems with storage spaces that are not enough: in the side doors, under the seats (surcharge of 72 euros), pockets on the backs of the front seats, a modest (unlit) box in front of the passenger is small a shelf above the driver's left knee and two places for cans and a mini-shelf in front of the gear lever. Jar spaces are useless when we want to store a large package (half a liter), as there is an air conditioner above them.

The test Ibiza also had a driver's right-hand backrest (with a small box), which requires an additional fee. The backrest is preventing the parking brake from being applied. The dashboard is slightly turned towards the driver in the middle, you will have to pay extra for a two-color one ("design" package). Noteworthy is the unusual radio (MP3, Bluetooth-headset with steering wheel control), which could be less complicated to operate.

Did you know that the Ibiza SC was designed by Luc Donckerwolke, who also has a Lamborghini Gallardo on his conscience? So SC Little Lambo? With this 1-liter petrol engine, which at 6 "horsepower" is currently the most powerful petrol engine on offer, unfortunately not. The engine is a good helper at 105 rpm, but for a more dynamic ride it needs to be revved up to 1.500 rpm, where it reaches its maximum power.

During such driving, frequent use of the gear lever is necessary, which moves very precisely. Unfortunately, the transmission is only five-speed, the last gear can be used from 50 km / h, and there is also too much noise that accompanies driving on the highway at 130 km / h (the tachometer shows 3.500 rpm). Even at a speed of 90 km / h (fifth gear about 2.500 rpm), the engine noise is annoying.

It is a pity that the engine did not become more lively, as the Ibiza chassis is stiffer (stiffness is not too heavy and can be used for everyday driving) than ordered for dynamic driving, which makes it possible to have fun even without - switchable ESP (only switchable anti-skid system) and gives a sense of security.

Compared to the five-door Ibiza, this SC with a sports chassis tilts less and the chassis is also slightly louder! The steering system is quite accurate. As in the test of the five-door Ibiza, here we will also find a representative who requires an additional payment of 411 euros for the most equipped version for ESP (the price includes help with starting up the hill and TCS). There is also an additional charge for the option to deactivate the front passenger airbag and the curtain airbags. Another strange thing happened to us during the test: we poured 45 liters of fuel into the fuel tank of Ibiza, which, according to the factory data, holds 53 liters of liquid!

evaluation

  • The SC is distinct enough from the five-door Ibiza in terms of usability and purpose that you should have no problem deciding between a five- or three-door version. However, we still want to have a 1.4 TSI engine (combined with DSG) with which it would be a real SportCoupe - so that we no longer think that the SC (combined with the current motorization of Ibiza) is just a marketing idea.
