Symptoms of a Faulty or Faulty Power Steering Pump

If you hear squealing noises, the steering wheel feels tight, or you find damage to the power steering belt, replace the power steering pump.

The power steering pump is used to apply the right amount of pressure to the wheels for smooth turning. The accessory drive belt rotates the power steering pump, pressurizing the high pressure side of the power steering hose and directing that pressure to the inlet side of the control valve. This pressure comes in the form of power steering fluid, which is pumped from the reservoir to the steering gear as needed. There are up to 5 signs of a bad or failing power steering pump, so if you notice any of the following, have a professional mechanic check the pump as soon as possible:

1. Whining noise when turning the steering wheel

A whistling sound when turning the steering wheel of the vehicle indicates a problem with the power steering system. It could be a leak in the power steering pump or a low fluid level. If the power steering fluid level remains at this level for too long, the entire power steering system may be damaged. In any case, the power steering pump should be inspected and possibly replaced by a professional.

2. Steering wheel is slow to respond or tight

If your steering is slow to respond to steering wheel inputs while turning, chances are your power steering pump is failing, especially if accompanied by a whining noise. The steering wheel may also be stiff when turning, another sign of a bad power steering pump. Steering problems often require replacement of the power steering pump.

3. Screeching sounds when starting the car

A faulty power steering pump can also cause a screeching sound when starting the vehicle. While they can also occur during tight turns, you will most likely hear them within a minute of your car starting up for the first time. If it appears to be coming from the hood of your vehicle, it is a sign of a power steering pump failure that is causing the belt to slip.

4. Moans

Squeaky sounds are a sign of lack of fluid in the power steering system and can eventually damage the entire system, including the steering rack and lines. They will get progressively worse as your power steering pump continues to fail, which can lead to a complete replacement of the power steering system.

5. Reddish brown puddle under the car

While it can also be from lines, hoses, and other steering gear, a power steering pump can be leaking from a crack in the pump housing or reservoir. A red or red-brown puddle under the vehicle indicates the power steering pump. The pump will need to be diagnosed by a mechanic and most likely replaced.

As soon as you notice unusual noises coming from your vehicle or the steering becomes hard or slow, check the power steering pump and replace it if necessary. Power steering is an integral part of your vehicle and is a safety concern, so it should be taken care of by a professional as soon as possible.
