Symptoms of a Failed or Failed Rotor and Distributor Cap

Common symptoms include engine misfiring, vehicle won't start, Check Engine light comes on, and excessive or unusual engine noise.

A running engine sends a large amount of electricity through the ignition coils to a rotor that rotates inside the distributor. The rotor directs energy through the spark plug wires and ultimately to the engine cylinders in the correct ignition order.

The rotor and distributor cap separate the contents of the distributor from the engine and keep the working parts of the distributor clean and tidy while maintaining incredibly high voltages of energy and directing them to the appropriate spark plugs. Spark plugs use the spark from the distributor to ignite the fuel mixture, which keeps the engine running.

High voltage runs through this entire distribution system while your car is running, but if there is a problem, that voltage will not be distributed to the correct spark plugs to ensure your engine will run. Usually, a failed rotor and distributor cap will cause several symptoms that alert the driver to service.

1. Engine misfiring

Engine misfiring can occur for a number of reasons. Checking the rotor and distributor cap to see if they need to be replaced is one way to make sure everything is in good working order.

2. Car won't start

When the distributor cap is not tightly closed or malfunctioning, the engine is unable to send a spark through the entire circuit needed to move the cylinders, which eventually makes the car run.

3. Check Engine light comes on.

Your Check Engine light can mean a few different things, but when you see this light along with some of the other symptoms listed here, it's time to call a professional to find out what the code is from your car's computer.

4. Excessive or unusual engine noise

Your car can make very strange noises if the rotor and distributor cap are bad, especially because the cylinders are trying to start but are not working. You may hear a thump, click, or hiss as the rotor and distributor cap fail.

Every time you do a routine maintenance on your car, have your ignition system checked for defects or problems. If you have problems starting your car, please contact a qualified AvtoTachki mobile auto mechanic for help.
