Symptoms of a Bad or Faulty Air Filter

The engine air filter is a common service component that can be found on almost all modern vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. It serves to filter the air entering the engine so that only clean air passes through the engine. Without a filter, dirt, pollen and debris can enter the engine and burn in the combustion chamber. 1. Reduced fuel consumption
One of the first signs that an air filter may need to be replaced is a decrease in fuel consumption. A filter that is heavily contaminated with dirt and debris will not be able to filter the air effectively, and as a result, the engine will receive less air. This will reduce the efficiency of the engine and cause it to use more fuel to travel the same distance or at the same speed as with a clean filter.

Another sign of a dirty air filter is reduced engine performance and power. Reduced air intake due to a dirty filter will adversely affect engine efficiency. In severe cases, such as a clogged air filter, the engine may experience a significant reduction in acceleration and overall power output.

The best way to know if an air filter needs replacing is to simply look at it. If, when the filter is removed, it can be seen that it is heavily covered with dirt and debris on the suction side, then the filter should be replaced.
