Symptoms of a Bad or Faulty Air Filter

Check if your car's air filter is dirty. If you notice a decrease in fuel consumption or engine performance, you may need to replace your air filter.

The engine air filter is a common service component that can be found on almost all modern vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines. It serves to filter the air entering the engine so that only clean air passes through the engine. Without a filter, dirt, pollen and debris can enter the engine and burn in the combustion chamber. This can harm not only the combustion chamber, but also the components of the vehicle's exhaust gases. Due to the amount of debris the filter collects, it should be inspected and replaced regularly. Usually, when the air filter needs to be replaced, some symptoms will begin to appear in the car that may alert the driver.

1. Reduced fuel consumption

One of the first signs that an air filter may need to be replaced is a decrease in fuel consumption. A filter that is heavily contaminated with dirt and debris will not be able to filter the air effectively, and as a result, the engine will receive less air. This will reduce the efficiency of the engine and cause it to use more fuel to travel the same distance or at the same speed as with a clean filter.

2. Reduced engine power.

Another sign of a dirty air filter is reduced engine performance and power. Reduced air intake due to a dirty filter will adversely affect engine efficiency. In severe cases, such as a clogged air filter, the engine may experience a significant reduction in acceleration and overall power output.

3. Dirty air filter.

The best way to know if an air filter needs replacing is to simply look at it. If, when the filter is removed, it can be seen that it is heavily covered with dirt and debris on the suction side, then the filter should be replaced.

Usually, checking the air filter is a relatively simple procedure that you can do yourself. But if you are not comfortable with such a task or it is not an easy procedure (as in some cases with European cars), have it checked by a professional specialist, for example from AvtoTachki. If necessary, they can replace your air filter and restore proper performance and fuel efficiency to your vehicle.
