Symptoms of a Bad or Faulty Steering Column

Common symptoms include a lack of tilt lock, clicking or grinding sounds when turning, and rough steering wheel operation.

The steering and suspension system of modern cars, trucks and SUVs performs several functions. They help us to move safely in various road conditions and work together to provide smooth and easy steering. However, most importantly, they help us to direct the vehicle in the direction in which we are going to move. One of the most important parts of this process is the steering column.

Most modern cars use rack and pinion power steering. The steering column is located at the top of the steering system and is attached directly to the steering wheel. The steering column is then attached to the intermediate shaft and universal joints. When a steering column fails, there are several warning signs that can alert the owner to a potential minor or major mechanical problem in the steering system that could result in the steering column being replaced.

Here are a few signs that your steering column may be failing:

1. The steering wheel tilt function is not blocked.

One of the most convenient parts of the steering wheel is the tilt function, which allows drivers to set the angle and position of the steering wheel for more efficient operation or comfort. When you activate this feature, the steering wheel will move freely but should eventually lock into place. This ensures that the steering wheel is strong and at the optimum height and angle for you while driving. If the steering wheel does not lock up, this is a critical sign of a problem with the steering column or one of the many components inside the column.

However, if this symptom occurs, do not drive a car under any circumstances; as an unlocked steering wheel is a potentially dangerous situation. Be sure to contact your local ASE certified mechanic to check and fix this issue for you.

2. Clicking or grinding sound when turning the steering wheel

Another common warning sign of a steering column problem is a sound. If you hear a creaking, grinding, clicking or clanging sound when you turn the steering wheel, it is most likely coming from the internal gears or bearings inside the steering column. This problem usually occurs over a period of time, so it is possible that you will hear it from time to time. If this sound is heard constantly when you operate the steering wheel, contact a mechanic as soon as possible to solve this problem, as driving a car with a damaged steering column is dangerous.

3. The steering wheel is uneven

State-of-the-art power steering components are designed to operate smoothly and consistently. If you notice that the steering wheel does not turn smoothly, or you feel a "pop" in the steering wheel when turning, the problem is usually related to a restriction inside the steering column. There are several gears and spacers inside the steering column that allow the steering system to work properly.

Because dirt, dust, and other debris can enter the steering column, objects can fall in and block the smooth operation of these gears. If you spot this warning sign, have your mechanic inspect your steering column as it could be something small that can be easily fixed.

4. The steering wheel does not return to the middle

Each time you drive the vehicle, the steering wheel should automatically return to the zero position or to the center position after completing the turn. This is a safety feature that was introduced with power steering. If the steering wheel does not automatically center when the wheel is released, it is most likely caused by a clogged steering column or broken gear inside the unit. Either way, this is a problem that needs immediate attention and inspection by a professional ASE certified mechanic.
