Symptoms of a bad or faulty CV upload
Common signs include grease seeping onto the inside of the wheels, vibrations around the CV axle, and clicking noises during cornering.
Constant speed axles, commonly referred to as CV axles, are the component that transfers power from the transmission to the wheels to propel the vehicle forward. They have a flexible CV joint that allows the axle to flex in a variety of ways to accommodate wheel movement generated during cornering and suspension movement.
This flexible connection is covered by a rubber boot called CV Boot. This boot serves as a simple dust cover for the CV joint, designed to keep out dust and dirt, as well as to retain the grease that lubricates the CV joint. When a CV joint boot fails, this opens up the possibility of damage to the CV joint due to contamination. Usually, a problematic CV loading causes several symptoms that may alert the driver that attention may be needed.
1. Grease leakage
Lubricant leakage is the first symptom that is most often associated with a bad or defective CV boot. Over time, weathering can cause CV boots to become dry or brittle, crack or tear. When a CV boot cracks or tears, grease will usually leak inside the wheel. Often, grease can also get on the chassis or other parts of the underside of the car when turning the CV axle. A torn boot can also allow dirt, debris, and moisture to enter the CV joint, causing it to fail.
2. Vibrations from CV axes
Another sign of a bad CV boot is vibrations coming from the CV axis. Vibrations can be the result of moisture or debris getting into the CV joint and damaging it. Usually the vibrating CV axle needs to be replaced.
3. Clicks when turning
Another more serious sign of a potentially torn CV boot is the clicking sounds of the axle during turns. This is a symptom that the CV joint has become loose to such an extent that there is play, which is why it clicks during turns. The snap CV joint will need to be replaced as most CV joints are usually maintenance free.
The CV joint boots serve a simple but important purpose and allow the CV joint axles and joints to remain clean and have a long service life.
