The e-TOLL system - everything you need to know about it!

The e-TOLL system is controlled by the head of the National Tax Administration. It replaced the previously used viaTOLL system. This allows users to view their commission history on an ongoing basis and access all data and documents in one place. Want to know more? Check out our article!

e-TOLL system - what is it?

The e-TOLL system is a state-of-the-art solution implemented and supervised by the head of the National Tax Administration. The main purpose of the system is the convenient collection of tolls on toll sections of highways, national and express roads, which are under the jurisdiction of the GDDKiA. On October 1, 2021, it replaced the viaTOLL system, which had been in operation since 2011.

The e-TOLL system is based on a technology that allows you to determine the position of the vehicle using satellite positioning. Passenger cars can use this system on sections of the A4 motorway Wroclaw - Sosnica and A2 Konin - Strykow. Thanks to this system, passage through the toll booths is now barrier-free. The motorway entry ticket is no longer sold at the toll booth. Legal entry to the motorway is possible after purchasing an electronic ticket in one of the official distribution channels.

On which motorway sections can e-TOLL be used?

The e-TOLL system is currently operating on sections administered by the Directorate General of National Roads and Highways:

  • A2 Konin-Strykov;
  • A4 Bielany-Sosnitsa.

There are still toll gates on the A1 motorway near Torun and Gdańsk, on the A2 motorway between Swiecko and Konin, and on the A4 motorway Katowice-Krakow. There you can use automatic payment, but this is a separate system, not related to e-TOLL.

Login to e-TOLL - how to do it?

Car owners wishing to use the e-TOLLING system can register in three ways:

  • on the e-TOLL government website - using a trusted profile, the mObywatel application or electronic banking;
  • at e-TOLL customer service points - you must have an identity document with you, indicate your e-mail address and present a vehicle registration document.
  • through one of the transport card providers.

The user who decides to register in the system must choose one of the payment methods:

  • prepaid method - you need to replenish your account during registration. It is from it that funds will be collected for the use of the highway;
  • deferred payment - upon registration, you can establish the security of your account by depositing cash or a guarantee.

Any number of vehicles can be assigned to each account. In the case of a deferred payment account, each additional vehicle will increase the amount of the deposit.

e-Toll - motorway ticket

A road ticket is one of the ways to travel along sections of toll highways under the jurisdiction of the State Department for Road Traffic and Civil Aviation. An e-ticket for the motorway can be purchased up to 60 days before the trip. However, you will need to provide the following information:

  • registration number of the vehicle;
  • the section of the motorway you will be driving on;
  • date and time of the start of traffic on the motorway.

What is the penalty for not having a ticket?

Traveling without a ticket is subject to a fine of 50 euros. If the driver tries to cover up the license plates so that his vehicle is not recognized, he will be fined an additional amount of 50 euros. When driving on the motorway, it is worth remembering that it is being watched by law enforcement vehicles equipped with cameras for fixing license plates. If the driver did not have the e-TOLL app, forgot to pay the road ticket but missed the police check, he can pay the toll within 3 days of entering the motorway. To avoid trouble, it is better to buy a ticket in advance.

e-TOLL PL application - the most important information

The e-TOLL PL application is a tool that allows you to collect tolls on toll sections of national roads and motorways electronically. It is an alternative to on-board units (OBUs) and external positioning systems (ZSLs). Thanks to the application you will be able to:

  • pay an electronic fee for cars, road trains with a maximum permissible weight of less than 3,5 tons, buses;
  • pay for the use of toll sections of the A2 and A4 motorways;
  • replenishment of the account balance in the prepaid mode;
  • monitoring the status of a prepaid account;
  • SENT-GO can also control the transport of sensitive goods.

The e-TOLL PL app is available for free on the Google Play Store and the AppStore. After installing it on the device, a business identifier will be generated, which must be specified in the Client's Personal Account on the Internet. The application will now appear as on-board equipment, i.e. on-board equipment that can be assigned to a vehicle. Now the user can specify in which vehicle it will be used and drive it on toll roads covered by the e-TOLL system.

e-TOLL PL application

The e-TOLL PL Ticket app is also available on the Google Play Store and the AppStore. This free application allows you to buy an e-ticket for the motorway. Unlike the e-TOLL PL app, the toll is not automatically charged when the location indicates that the driver is driving on the motorway. The ticket must be purchased before leaving the motorway. You can go to the track and buy a ticket within the next 3 days, but in the event of a check by law enforcement agencies, the driver will be fined.

The e-TOLL PL Bilet application can be used for motorcycles, passenger cars and road trains with a GVW of no more than 3,5 tonnes. The ticket is valid on motorways operated by GDDKiA, i.e. A2 Konin-Strykow and A4 Wrocław-Sosnica. Thanks to the application you will be able to:

  • purchase an e-ticket for the motorway, which allows you to drive on toll sections A2 and A4;
  • generate a history of tickets purchased in the application;
  • generate a confirmation of the purchase of a railway ticket in pdf format;
  • return of unused road e-ticket.

e-TOLL device - what is an OBU?

The e-TOLL ticket application is a good solution, but not the only one. Drivers who don't want to use the app on their phone can use the on-board device. The on-board unit sends location data and allows you to automatically calculate tolls on toll motorways and toll roads supported by the e-TOLL system. However, when using the device, you should remember to replenish funds before you go. If you do not trust applications or for some reason do not want to install them on your phone, you should choose OBU.

e-TOLL device - what is ZSL?

An alternative to the OBU is the ZSL. This small GPS locator is usually hidden under the dashboard and is powered by the onboard electrical outlet or sometimes by its own battery. Thanks to this device, you can pay e-TOLL in the car to which this ZSL is assigned. It also protects against theft and enables efficient fleet management with a service offered by the system provider.

Where to buy an e-TOLL device?

You do not know where to buy the e-TOLL device? Devices approved for use, i.e. that have received a positive result in special tests for the e-TOLL system can be purchased from the network of the Ministry of Finance or the operator of the on-board device. After purchasing the device, carefully read its instructions and instructions for use. Do not forget to register the device in the e-TOLL system and link it to a specific vehicle.

How else can you buy a ticket?

Motorway tolls can also be paid through one of the apps whose owners have partnered with the head of the National Tax Administration. Drivers who rarely drive on motorways can purchase a paper ticket from stationary partner networks. Here are the companies where you can buy a ticket that will allow you to legally enter the motorway:
