The system that protects cyclists from Volvo
Volvo has introduced the world's first system that activates automatic emergency braking of a car in the event of an imminent collision with a cyclist. This is another active safety system that should help implement the 2020 plan. It suggests that in 7 years the Swedish manufacturer's cars will be so safe that people will not die in them. At the same time, these vehicles must be equally safe for other road users.
On European roads, being hit by a car is the cause of every second fatal accident involving cyclists. 
The solution to this problem should be a system that uses a camera and radar to monitor the space in front of the car. When an overtaking cyclist makes a sudden maneuver and is in the path of a collision, the system activates the automatic emergency braking of the vehicle. If the speed difference between your car and motorcycle is small, there will be no collision at all. In the case of a greater difference in speeds, the system will reduce the impact speed and minimize its consequences. The processor that controls the system reacts only in critical situations. Prior to market launch, this solution was tested in cities with a large number of bicycles to prevent the vehicle from automatically braking when it is not needed. Emergency 
Braking is resumed when the vehicle speed does not exceed 80 km/h. The system is able to detect that the driver is taking active steps to avoid a collision, such as jerking the steering wheel. Then its action is softened so that such a maneuver can be performed. The current first generation of this system only detects cyclists moving in the same direction as the car.

Cyclist Detection is an evolution of the already known automatic pedestrian detection system (Pedestrian Detection) used previously, including on the V40, S60, V60 and XC60. Vehicles equipped with this solution will detect both pedestrians and cyclists. Cyclist Detection Solution will be an option on all models except the XC90.
