Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 220 KM Sportline is a highway cruiser

You don't always have to be on top. If we are looking for a fast car, our focus will be on the strongest and most expensive versions first. However, in their shadow are often cars that offer a similar experience but at a much lower price.

One of these cars Skoda Superb with 2.0 TSI engine with 220 hp.. Next to it in the price list, we will see a 280-horsepower version. All-wheel drive also speaks in favor of a stronger one, as it allows you to use power in almost any conditions.

However, the difference in price of these models is as much as 18 thousand. zloty. For the base price of the Skoda Superb, which will be the “better”, you can buy a more equipped version - only with a weaker 60 hp engine. Could such a version convince us?

With Sportline package

Before we go any further, let's take a look at the version Sportline We haven't been able to do this before.

Sportline package transforms the limousine into a car with a more sporty character. This is primarily a styling package that reshapes the bumpers, retains the dark grille style, and gives the headlights a dark interior. The most interesting element here, however, are the 19-inch Vega wheels. This is a new, fairly effective scheme.

The changes also apply to the interior. First of all, in the Sportline we will see a sports steering wheel and seats with integrated headrests, which are somewhat reminiscent of those in the Octavia RS. The interior also gets decorative door sills, red and carbon fiber accents, and aluminum pedal caps.

Among the functional additives is the HMI Sport system, which allows you to monitor the temperature of the oil, coolant and check the level of overloads.

And as far as appearance is concerned, it is. Sportline versions in the price list are located between the Style and Laurin & Klement trim levels.

Is this version worth trying?

The 2.0-horsepower 220 TSI engine is quite at a disadvantage. On the one hand, we have a "star" - a 280-strong version. On the other hand, however, there is a cheaper 1.8 TSI that goes up to 180 hp. However, this 220-horsepower version is worth reaching out to. Why?

The main difference between the most powerful Superb and the 220-horsepower one is the presence of a more powerful all-wheel drive. As a result, the difference in acceleration time is as much as 1,3 seconds in favor of the first car. This is 5,8 seconds versus 7,1 seconds.

However, both machines have the same torque of 350 Nm. In the more powerful Skoda, it is available 1600 rpm wider. range, which will also affect traction at higher speeds. However, if we were racing - but with a running start - the difference in acceleration time to 100 or 120 km / h would not be so big.

220 hp, hitting only the front axle, is still a lot for tires - on slippery roads, the traction control system has to intervene more often. In such situations, four-wheel drive could already come in handy, but we are talking about extreme sports - in the rain, nothing prevents you from driving this car quickly.

And almost the fastest Superb can be fast. In corners, the XDS + system is immediately felt, which, with the help of brakes, simulates the work of a limited-slip differential. The inside wheel is braked and we feel the effect of pulling the front of the car into the turn. This boosts driving confidence and makes the Superba surprisingly agile, even on very twisty roads. He had no problem with the famous "pans" in Khabovka (the route from Krakow to Nowy Targ).

However, there's no denying that the Skoda Superb is a cruiser tractor for hundreds of kilometers - and not a troublemaker who always has to prove that he's the fastest. The Sportline seats are comfortable for long trips, and the suspension in Comfort mode can handle bumps quite well - although it does get too bouncy then - only good for city and highway use.

The undoubted advantage of a slightly weaker engine will be lower fuel consumption. According to the manufacturer, this will save an average of 1 l/100 km at an average consumption of 6,3 l/100 km. In practice, this is very similar, although we usually operate with large amounts. The test model on the highway required about 9-10 l / 100 km, and in the city from 11 to 12 l / 100 km. This is about a liter less than the 280-horsepower version needs.

Save?

Skoda Superb is first and foremost a limousine. Even for the most powerful version, the track will not become a second home. This is a car that should accompany the driver over long distances. Here 220 hp will be as good as 280 hp. Which version we choose will depend directly on our budget as well as our own preferences. Someone really wants to ride a car that accelerates to “hundreds” in less than 6 seconds. Another second difference does not bother you.

We'll get both engines in the most basic Superba variant, the Active. Prices for 2.0 TSI 220 KM start at PLN 114 and for 650 TSI 2.0 KM from PLN 280. This is an interesting procedure on the part of Skoda - to offer top-end versions with not necessarily top-end equipment.

The Sportline, however, costs PLN 141 for the 550 hp version. Of course, its equipment is better than that of the Active level, but the styling package plays a big role here. If we want our Skoda to look "faster", this is the only way.
