How much does a plug-in hybrid smoke? What is combustion BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance? [ANSWER]

One of our readers, Mr. Jacek, drives a plug-in hybrid: BMW 740Le. We decided to ask him for data from a computer in order to check whether the fuel consumption of a car charged from an outlet can really be 2,5-3,5 liters per 100 kilometers. The effect? It really is!

BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance represents the previous generation of the BMW 7 Series Plug-in Hybrid. The car is equipped with a 4-cylinder internal combustion engine with a capacity of 190 kW (250 hp) and engine electric power 83 kW (113 HP). The total power of the entire system is 240 kW (326 hp), the total torque is 500 Nm. The battery capacity is 7,4 kWh (gross: 9,2 kWh).

When the hybrid mode is on (Auto eDrive by default), the car may not start the combustion engine up to 80 km / h (manufacturer data; Mr. Jacek managed to reach 90-110 km / h). In electric mode (Max eDrive) without starting the combustion engine, we can accelerate to 140 km / h. The car in this version weighs 2 kilograms, which is slightly more than 075 tons.

During the premiere, the manufacturer promised an extremely optimistic battery range - more than 40 kilometers - as usual according to the NEDC cycle. However, the actual flight range on one charge is slightly less, Mr. Jacek indicates it at 20-25 kilometers, the application gives 26 kilometers:

According to our Reader, it is next to impossible to plan such short-range routes if we are hunting for free chargers. We have to stick to the route or recharge when we travel by shuttle from home to work.

What does fuel consumption look like during normal driving?

In the current measurement cycle, Mr. Jacek drove 8 kilometers and the average fuel consumption at this distance was 3,4 liters per 100 kilometers. (the computer counts distances up to 10 kilometers).

However, this is less realistic. Above, the average was overestimated for the 600 km route to Poznań on petrol and the 1 km circular route Warsaw – Jurata – Ruciane Nida – Warsaw. Before the highway, fuel consumption was 200 l / 2,5 km, after it increased to 100 l / 3,7 km, now it has dropped to 100 l / 3,4 km.

For example, from Warsaw to Jurata at a speed of 150 km / h on the A2 and A1 motorways, our Reader enables battery management (charging and maintaining the battery level) on the Gdańsk bypass. He gets to the Shell station in Puck with a declared power reserve of 25-27 kilometers. From there, almost the entire route to Jurata runs on electricity. The distance of 490 kilometers is usually covered in 4 hours, including refueling.

When driving on petrol alone, the fuel consumption of the BMW 740Le xDrive iPerformance is about 10 liters per 100 kilometres. With local movement with recharging, where it will give back - less than 1 l / 100 km.
