How much does it cost to charge a Tesla 3 at home? on the supercharger? at Greenway station? We count [year 2019] • ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

How much does it cost to fully charge a Tesla electric vehicle? What are the electricity costs of a Tesla Model 3 versus the fuel costs of an internal combustion car? How much does it cost to charge a Tesla 3 at home and how much on a Supercharger according to the latest tariffs introduced in 2019? Let's try to count.

Table of contents

  • The cost of charging Tesla Model 3 in Poland
    • The cheapest: houses in the G12 tariff or one of its variants (G12w, G12as)
    • Cheap: houses at the G11 tariff (0,62 PLN / kWh *)
    • Quite cheap: on Tesla superchargers (PLN 1,24 / kWh)
    • Most expensive: at Greenway charging stations (PLN 2,19 / kWh)
    • Summation

The first Tesla 3 variant in Poland will likely be the Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor (Long Range AWD) and Tesla Model 3 Performance. In turn, in May Tesla Model 3 Mid Range can be delivered to Europe. Technical data of these vehicles, which are important for the further part of the calculations:

  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor / Performance: battery capacity 75 kWh, real range when driving slowly in good weather: about 500 / about 450 kilometers (Source: Tesla Model 3 Performance Real Mileage - Bjorn Nyland TEST [YouTube]) and at 120 km/h approximately 420 / approximately 400 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 Mid Range: battery capacity 62 kWh, real range when driving slowly in good weather: about 420 kilometers, and at 120 km / h about 330 km (data estimated).

We assume that the car is charging:

  • at Greenway stations using CCS,
  • on superchargers,
  • at home.

... and that the price of fuel is PLN 4,7 per liter.

The cheapest: houses in the G12 tariff or one of its variants (G12w, G12as)

Since the ploy of artificially lowering energy prices in Poland is not over yet, we do not know what the final electricity prices will be in 2019. Therefore, we assume that we are using the G12 tariff at home in one of the cheapest options: electricity price is 0,42 zł / kWh.... Of course, when charging, we take into account the losses on the charger and the heating or cooling of the battery, which we assume is around + 8 percent.

With these caveats, we can calculate the cost of charging a Tesla 3 at home:

  • Tesla Model 3 Performance (car with better parameters than Audi RS4 and BMW M3)
    • PLN 34 for a full battery charge,
    • 7,6 zł / 100 km when driving slowly (“trying to keep 90-100 km / h” or “driving around town”), which corresponds to 1,6 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • 8,5 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 1,8 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor (car with parameters similar to Audi S4 and BMW 330i)
    • PLN 34 for a full battery charge,
    • 6,8 PLN / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 1,4 l / 100 km,
    • 8,1 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 1,7 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 mid-range
    • PLN 28,1 for a full battery charge,
    • 6,7 PLN / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 1,4 l / 100 km,
    • 8,5 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 1,8 l / 100 km (indicative values).

A comment: The premium D car will cost us less than the most fuel efficient gas powered scooters. There will probably be public transport in the back with monthly tickets.

Cheap: houses at the G11 tariff (0,62 PLN / kWh *)

*) predicted value

The cost of charging an electric car at home will be low, even if we do not want to change the tariff for “cheap weekend” (G12w) or “anti-smog” (G12as). If we stay in the G11 tariff, Electricity prices in 2019 will rise to an average of 0,62 zł / kWh.charging and driving Tesla Model 3 will cost us:

  • Tesla Model 3 Performance
    • PLN 50,2 for a full battery charge,
    • 11,2 PLN / 100 km when driving slowly (“I try to keep 90-100 km / h” or “I drive around town”), which corresponds to 2,4 liters of gasoline per 100 km,
    • 12,6 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 2,7 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor
    • PLN 50,2 for a full battery charge,
    • PLN 10 per 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 2,1 l / 100 km.
    • 12 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 2,5 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 mid-range
    • PLN 41,5 for a full battery charge,
    • PLN 9,9 per 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 2,1 l / 100 km.
    • 12,6 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 2,7 l / 100 km.

A comment: So, we can see that even with charging at the more expensive G11 tariff, driving a comfortable D-class sedan will cost us about the same as a trip on a quality gasoline scooter with an economical 125cc engine. See with electronic injection. These combustion parameters are unattainable in a vehicle with an internal combustion engine.

Quite cheap: on Tesla superchargers (PLN 1,24 / kWh)

The advantage of Tesla superchargers is that we don't have to account for any losses (see the Greenway paragraph): we pay for the energy that goes into the battery. After the last increase and subsequent reduction, the costs will be as follows:

  • Tesla Model 3 Performance
    • PLN 93 for a full battery charge,
    • 20,7 zł / 100 km when driving slowly (“trying to keep 90-100 km / h” or “driving around town”), which corresponds to 4,4 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • 23,3 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 5 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor
    • PLN 93 for a full battery charge,
    • 18,6 zł / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 4 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • 22,1 PLN / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 4,7 l / 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 mid-range
    • PLN 79,9 for a full battery charge,
    • 18,3 zł / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 3,9 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • PLN 23,3 / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 5 l / 100 km (approximate calculations).

A comment: Despite the recent spike in energy prices for the Tesla Supercharger, it continues to drive very economical driving thanks to it. Achieving a fuel consumption of 4 liters per 100 kilometers (Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor with a smooth ride) is not easy to achieve in a C-segment car, and we have not yet seen such a result in a D-segment car.

> Tesla raises prices at charging stations. We assume: this is not the last trip

Most expensive: at Greenway charging stations (PLN 2,19 / kWh)

After connecting the cars to the fast charging socket of the Greenway Polska station, today [= January 2019] the car will be charged with 43–44 kW. Thus, in 45 minutes we will receive a maximum of 33 kWh of energy from the station. At the simplest rate, it will cost PLN 72,3. Adjusted for about 3 percent losses: 74,4 zł.

If we wanted charge the batteries completely – which is usually not done because above 80 percent charge the process slows down significantly, so we will be charged extra to lock the charger – we will need to do this in 2-3 sessions. Assuming, however, that we decide to engage in such gymnastics, the costs are as follows (taking into account 3 percent losses):

  • Tesla Model 3 Performance: PLN 169,2,
  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor (Long Range AWD): PLN 169,2,
  • Tesla Model 3 mid-range: PLN 139,9.

Taking into account the possible distances, the trip will cost us:

  • Tesla Model 3 Performance:
    • 37,6 zł / 100 km when driving slowly (“trying to keep 90-100 km / h” or “driving around town”), which corresponds to 8 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • PLN 42,3 / 100 km at 120 km / h, which corresponds to 9 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor:
    • PLN 33,8 / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 7,2 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • 40,3 zł / 100 km when driving at a speed of 120 km / h, which corresponds to 8,6 liters of petrol per 100 km.
  • Tesla Model 3 mid-range:
    • 33,3 zł / 100 km when driving slowly, which corresponds to 7,1 liters of gasoline per 100 km.
    • PLN 42,4 / 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h (indicative values).

A comment: There is nothing to hide, using the Greenway station should be the exception, not the rule for Tesla 3 owners. The cost of driving will be similar to the cost of driving on gasoline.

Summation

When charging a Tesla 3 at home, the energy (“fuel”) costs of this otherwise large vehicle are lower or close to the operating costs of a 125cc scooter. Cm.3 or by public transport. We can drive thousands of kilometers a month, and we won’t feel it in our wallet – we will 3-4 times cheaper than if we wanted to travel these distances in an internal combustion car..

> Why is Tesla ending its referral program? Perhaps due to the fact that 80+ roadsters were donated for free. Jerzy was closest to Poland

When charging with superchargers, our costs will increase to the fuel cost of a C-class car with an economical diesel engine or LPG. If we are going to go on a tour on a charge at home - why not? – Diesels and LPG must remain in the body.

However, when charging only at Greenway stations, we will pay almost the same as for a similarly sized internal combustion vehicle. So if the Greenway charger is our only way to charge the battery, buying a Tesla Model 3 and any electric car doesn't make much sense.
