One of the Internet users described the behavior of his Tesla in the Supercharger. It turns out that a car left in the cold can be charged for a long, long time - it took him as much as 7 hours! Why? He made a mistake: he left the car in the cold with an almost discharged battery.

The owner of the Tesla Model S put the car in the cold with a badly discharged battery. When he left it, the Model S had a range of 32 miles. When he returned, it was -11 degrees, the vehicle's display range dropped to 0.

After connecting to the car, little has changed: the car never started charging. It turned out that less than 20 percent of the battery charge, the car does not start heating the battery... In this case, charging will not start if the battery temperature is below 0 degrees Celsius. Vicious circle.

The car was parked in the sun, and the temperature outside was about -2 degrees Celsius. Tesla's tech department has confirmed that the battery still has 12 percent energy. He started heating at maximum power and after 3-4 hours (!) The battery finally began to slowly charge. Initially, with a capacity of… 1 kW.

As he began to load, he also began to warm up. After a few more hours, it reached the level of 25 kW.

Does this mean that electric cars are useless in winter?

No. The owner of the car allowed a situation that should not have happened: you cannot leave the car in the cold with a discharged battery. The car must have enough energy to run a heater (Tesla X / Tesla S) or engine (Tesla 3) from time to time and thus heat the battery.
