Too high oil pressure - what could be the reason?

The oil indicator light informs only about incorrect, usually too low oil pressure, and only the indicator can give an unambiguous answer whether a decrease or increase has occurred. An interesting situation is the increase in pressure above normal. What can it cause?

While in a relatively young car this situation almost never happens, too high oil pressure sometimes accompanies drivers of cars over 20 years old. The main reason for this is dirty oil passages, which block the free flow of oil and increase its pressure. Dirt can also be found in the oil line.next to the pressure sensor. High oil pressure is just as dangerous as too low, as it also results in poor lubrication.

Another reason for excessive pressure oil filter defect. It might be faulty bypass valve to reduce excess pressure, which creates an oil pump. If it locks in the closed position, it will cause the system to pressurize or cause a temporary disproportionate increase as the engine speed increases.

The filter is equipped with an internal valve that allows oil to flow around the filter element. This valve allows flow when the filter is clogged with debris. Therefore, it is extremely rare for an increase in pressure to occur due to a dirty filter. However, any unwanted object in the lubrication system can lead to such a situation. The bypass valve may also be blocked on the oil plunger.

Too much oil

Too much oil in the lubrication system can also cause a direct or indirect increase in pressure. However, this should be an exceptional situation, since it is not easy to increase the amount of oil so that its pressure increases. However, sometimes this happens when the diesel engine repeatedly tries to burn soot into the DPF and adds a lot of fuel to the oil.

What is the correct oil pressure?

The pressure in the lubrication system is not constant and depends on the speed and increase in engine load. In general, the correct pressure while driving is between 1,4 and even 3 bar. There are also cases when the correct pressure is 4 bar, and at idle 0,8 bar. The answer to the question of the correct oil pressure should always be in the service book.
