Great Wall 600 beats Prado.

The first images of the Great Wall Tank 600 have emerged ahead of the Chinese response to the official introduction of the Toyota LandCruiser Prado at the Chengdu Motor Show in August.

The images, reportedly of the Tank 600 preview, show the toned down version of the SUV we expected, missing some of the more unusual design details indicated in the preview sketches.

Gone, for example, are the forward-facing jawline of the SUV, the wildly flared guards, and the massive all-terrain tires.

In their place is a fairly staid unit, save for a huge American-style metal grille, and a model that looks, dare we say, a little dreary from a side angle.

Thankfully, though, we have a clear idea of what weapon it will carry in its war with the LandCruiser Prado, and it's a new 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 that will produce a hefty 260kW and 500N, mated to a nine-speed gearbox. Automatic transmission.

We also expect the Tank 600 to be vaguely Prado-sized, and we share Toyota's focus on combining on-road comfort with off-road capability.

What we don't yet know is if the Tank 600 will make it to Australia, but we do know that the brand here is really eyeing the Tank brand in general, and the smaller 300 looks more and more likely.

As reported last month, the Tank 300 is currently in Australia for review and testing, pending a decision on its future.

The smaller tank - it's 4760mm long, 1930mm wide, 1903mm high - is also geared towards heavy stuff and can take on vehicles like the Jeep Wrangler.
