Is road condition the most common cause of accidents?

The EuroRAP and Euro NCAP organizations involved in road and vehicle safety in Europe have published a report showing that, unfortunately, poor road quality is the most common cause of accidents.

The report submitted by EuroRAP and Euro NCAP is titled "Roads that cars can read". The report highlights that modern vehicles are adopting increasingly sophisticated technologies that improve driver and passenger safety. How important this is, since the condition of the roads (of course, not all) does not correspond to the technical solutions of manufacturers and nevertheless leads to an increased number of accidents. The report also refutes the thesis that the most common cause of accidents is speeding of vehicles. This shows that the main culprit is the condition of the roads.

EuroRAP and EuroNCAP praise systems such as Lane Support, which is responsible for checking that the car does not leave the lane for unintended reasons, or Speed ​​Alert, which warns the driver about speeding. Organizations are also pleased that more and more vehicles are using cameras and sensors to constantly monitor the environment around the vehicle. While everything is in order, the report clearly states that all of the above technologies will only work properly on roads in good condition, otherwise, for example, when the visibility of painted lanes on the road is poor, such systems are rendered useless.

In addition, European statistics confirm that a quarter of accidents occur due to the uncontrolled departure of a vehicle into its own lane. EuroRAP and Euro NCAP would like to save at least some of the lives of drivers by recommending the widespread use of the Lane Support system, which could reduce the number of fatalities on European roads by about two thousand a year. According to the report, of course, it is necessary to immediately begin to improve the condition of the roads.
