  • The first violation is a $50 fine.
  • The second and subsequent fines are $100.

A police officer may stop you for violating the above laws and for no other reason. Fines may be imposed, but additional sanctions may apply. So the total cost of your texting and driving could be over $50 or $100.

In the state of Colorado, 24.4 percent of 203,827 car accidents in 2013 were caused by distracted drivers. In addition, between 2008 and 2013, the number of car accidents caused by distracted driving increased by nine percent. Law enforcement is monitoring motorists who text and drive as the Colorado Department of Transportation works to reduce accidents due to distracted driving.
