Cell Phones and Texting: Distracted Driving Laws in Rhode Island

Texting and driving in Rhode Island is illegal for drivers of all ages and licenses. Drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using a mobile phone while driving.

Drivers using handheld devices are four times more likely to have a car accident and cause serious injury to themselves or other vehicles. In addition, if a driver sends text messages while driving, they are 23 times more likely to be involved in a car accident.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the average driver who views or sends a text message takes their eyes off the road for 4.6 seconds. At 55 mph, it's like driving through an entire football field without even looking at the road.

These statistics are just some of the reasons why Rhode Island is struggling with texting while driving. These laws are basic laws, which means that if a law enforcement officer sees you texting while driving or breaking mobile phone law, they can stop you.
