Braking Tips for New Drivers

Beginning drivers need to spend some time behind the wheel before they are ready to get out on their own and drive on busy roads. Situational awareness is difficult to maintain when there is so much going on around the car, and knowing what to focus on and when is a skill that comes with experience. That's why new drivers must learn to quickly recognize obstacles and brake safely to avoid collisions.

Tips for new drivers

  • Learn how to brake using the pivot method to train your foot to stay close to the brake pedal and learn how to brake smoothly.

  • Practice hard braking on a large open paved area. Step on the brake pedal and feel how the anti-lock braking system (ABS) keeps the wheels from locking up.

  • Drive on winding roads at low speed. Practice braking on corner entry before the car turns left or right. This is good practice in general, but it is especially useful for learning how to brake safely on slippery roads.

  • Have an adult or instructor in the passenger seat yell out an imaginary obstacle that could be in front of the vehicle in a safe area. This will train the reaction of the new driver.

  • Practice releasing the brakes when accelerating forward when pulling away from a stop on an incline.

  • Focus on the road farther away from the car to better predict when to slow down. The longer the driver knows about the need to brake, the smoother he does it.
