Over 18,000 eager Americans have joined Holden Commodore's support team.

They each applied to a contest run by Pontiac to choose an American name for an Australian export hero.

The ute tag used at home was rejected because it doesn't mean anything in the US where everyone talks about pickups.

The VE ute was unveiled at the New York Auto Show earlier this year as the newest member of the Pontiac G8 family, joining the four-door sedan and possibly pointing to a potential American expedition for the latest Commodore Sportwagon.

It was displayed in the Big Apple with a simple Sport Truck tag.

But Pontiac wanted something special for the G8, working and playing, and launched a "Name the Baby" contest.

It lasted almost two months and the results should be announced within two weeks.

“We were overwhelmed with over 18,000 unique names submitted, and the trademarking process took a little longer than we expected,” Pontiac spokeswoman Debbie Frakes told CARSguide.

GM Holden is also waiting for the results, initially hoping that the Commodore ute will be adopted by Chevrolet as a revived El Camino.

He has yet to hear the results of the competition, and is also waiting for word from Pontiac.
