Their chunky construction and shiny finish lend a slightly sportier feel. In addition, they are able to change the sound emitted by the car. The sound starts to sound more like bass.
Sports exhaust and elements that affect power
How are sports exhausts made that actually boost power? If you are absolutely interested in improving the performance of a car, look at the components of the exhaust system, namely:
- intake manifold;
- downpipe;
- catalyst.
It is these parts that are most responsible for the possible damping of the power generated by the engine. A sports exhaust can only give a significant boost in power if the tuning is done by professionals. Otherwise, the effect you get could be more power throttling or a huge amount of exhaust. Often just fitting a sports downpipe or other catalytic converter (we're not talking about cutting it out) has to go hand in hand with an engine map change.
Sports exhaust and the legality of modifications
What is the most common hint you get on internet forums when you ask about exhaust system changes? "Cut the executioner and weld the jar." Especially in turbocharged diesel engines, this is done in order to give the unit much better "breathing" by getting rid of the elements that delay it. However, it is important to remember that it is illegal to remove components such as a particulate filter or a catalytic converter from the exhaust system. As a result, the vehicle may not pass the cycle inspection. A sports exhaust designed in this way significantly increases the amount of exhaust gases emitted into the atmosphere.

How to make a sports exhaust in a car? To achieve the best engine parameters, many modifications are necessary.
- Start by polishing or increasing the flow of the intake ports in the intake manifold and head. This will provide better air and exhaust flows and thus allow more fuel to be injected.
- The next step is to replace the downpipe if you have one in your car. This is a special pipe found in cars with a turbine, the diameter of which is important for the flow of gases.
These two steps are, of course, only the beginning.

What else needs to be changed? A sports exhaust is supposed to increase engine power, and you will achieve this by increasing the rate at which exhaust gases leave the system. Straightening the entire exhaust is sometimes not enough and sometimes increases its diameter a little. It is worth leaving silencers, or at least one, so that you and the passengers of the vehicle do not become deaf. Also remember that in light of the law, passenger cars will soon not be able to exceed the level of 72 dB. If the police find that you overdid the exhaust modifications and the noise is too loud, they will revoke your registration.
How much power does tuning a sports exhaust system give?
Much depends on the amount of modifications, the current engine power and additional changes. Installing only a sports tip off the shelf of the cheapest products will surely degrade the performance of the car. On the other hand, a power increase of more than a dozen percent can lead to actions such as:
- performance of through exhaust;
- increase in pipe diameter;
- head porting with tuning.
For cars with a power of about 100 hp. all tuning can bring a noticeable improvement. The resulting effect is proportional to the cost of setting.
Active sports exhaust on a motorcycle
Sports exhaust can be made not only for cars, but also for motorcycles. Here the situation is even simpler, because the entire element can be replaced with a sports exhaust. It's not just about the muffler defining the sound. You can also change the episode before it. What gives a sports exhaust on a motorcycle? The new exhaust system improves sound but also increases power. It is assumed that this change is 5%, if you also change the air filter to a more flowing one. To improve performance, it is worth changing the engine map. Then the whole thing should give about 10% more power and slightly shift the torque to the lower part of the revolutions.
Should I buy a sports exhaust? It depends on the degree of modification and the current engine power. If you're only interested in replacing the muffler tip, don't count on more power. However, in general, a sporty exhaust, additional changes to the injection angle, boost pressure and fuel dose, as well as an increase in intake flow, can “mix up” a lot. In cars whose power is close to 150-180 hp, after such modifications, it is easy to exceed 200 hp. And this is a noticeable change.
