2022 Nissan Z performance comparison: How Japan's latest sports car differs from the Toyota Supra and every other similar coupe on the market
We'll compare the Nissan Zed to every comparable coupe on the market to see if the numbers add up.
Nissan's latest crack in the Zed formula is the talk of the world, but mostly because it defies the tide of electrification.
Perhaps the last non-electrified and mechanical hurray for the brand's sports catalog, Zed once again takes on a long list of contenders, including the obvious ones like the Toyota Supra and the less obvious ones like the Alpine A110.
Let's take a closer look at what we know and how the Zed will compare without getting into the full-fledged niche of high-end coupes like the Lotus and above, or sedan-based cars like the BMW 4 Series, which, while similar, are really actually not like that. in the same vein.
We know the Zed will be motivated by the VR-series 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 engine with a power output of 298kW/475Nm. It will be available even in Australia with either an eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission with limited slip mode or a six-speed manual transmission with a carbon composite driveshaft.
In terms of size, it shares a platform with the outgoing car, so there's little change in that regard, while Nissan took the opportunity to give the sports coupe a significant digital overhaul in the cabin.
We don't know pricing for the Zed yet, but data from international markets suggests it will carry a price tag not too dissimilar to the outgoing 370Z (which could be had from $50,490 to $64,490 on the road) and therefore significantly more affordable. than Supra.
The Supra is its key competitor, motivated by BMW's 3.0kW/285Nm 500-litre inline-six engine powering the rear wheels exclusively via an eight-speed automatic transmission, but it's worth remembering that the revived Japanese nameplate isn't the only vehicle. on the market in the same vein, but other products from Europe are worth mentioning.
Supra has always been destined to become Zed's main rival.
The first is the car to which the Supra owes its existence, the BMW Z4. Starting at $129,471 (MSRP) for the most equivalent 3.0-liter inline-six M40i variant, the Z4 is truly a premium offering at almost twice what the Nissan Zed should cost. Its power output matches the Supra at 285kW/500Nm, giving a power-to-weight ratio of 189.6kW/t.
The Alpine A110 is a sports coupe alternative developed by Renault Alpine Performance. Starting at $101,000 (suggested retail price), the A110 is smaller and lighter than its rivals and powered by a correspondingly smaller engine, a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder unit borrowed from the Megane RS hot hatch. Still producing an impressive 185 kW/320 Nm, Alpine has a power-to-weight ratio of 174.5 kW/t, which is not far from the competition.
In the opposite direction, Ford's seemingly ubiquitous Mustang. The big front-engined, rear-wheel-drive pony car is much closer to $64,390 for the V8 manual-transmission GT variant. Producing 339kW/556Nm but weighing more than its coupe rivals, the Mustang has a power-to-weight ratio of 194.2kW/t.
The V8-powered versions of the Mustang outperform most competitors.
For something else again, Audi offers its TT. Coupe shaped but front-wheel drive in nature, the TT starts at $80,272 for a base 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, or a whopping $137,900 for a full five-cylinder RS. Reportedly short for this world, the TT range is dual-clutch automatic only.
