Medium tank EE-T1/T2 “Osorio”

Medium tank EE-T1/T2 “Osorio”In the early 80s, specialists from the Brazilian company Engesa began to develop a tank, the design of which was supposed to use a turret with weapons from the English experimental tank Valiant manufactured by Vickers, as well as a West German diesel engine and automatic transmission. At the same time, it was planned to create two versions of the tank - one for its own Ground Forces, and the other for export deliveries.

Prototypes of these options, manufactured in 1984 and 1985, respectively, were designated EE-T1 and EE-T2, as well as the name "Ozorio" in honor of the Brazilian cavalry general who lived and fought successfully in the last century. Both tanks have been extensively tested in Saudi Arabia. In 1986, mass production of the EE-T1 Osorio medium tank began, taking into account export deliveries. Of the 1200 vehicles planned for production, only 150 are intended for the Brazilian army. Tank EE-T1 "Osorio" is made in the usual traditional layout. The hull and turret have spaced armor, and their frontal parts are made of multi-layer armor of the English "chobham" type. Three crew members are accommodated in the turret: commander, gunner and loader.

The tank is armed with an English 105-mm L7AZ rifled gun, a 7,62-mm machine gun coaxial with it, and a 7,62-mm or 12.7-mm anti-aircraft machine gun mounted in front of the loader's hatch. The ammunition load includes 45 shots and 5000 rounds of 7,62-mm caliber or 3000 rounds of 7,62-mm caliber and 600 rounds of 12,7-mm caliber. The gun is stabilized in two guidance planes and is equipped with electric drives. Six-barreled smoke grenade launchers are mounted on the sides of the rear of the tower. The Belgian-designed fire control system includes gunner's and commander's sights, designated 1N5-5 and 5S5-5, respectively. The first sight (combined) of the periscope type includes the optical sight itself (day and night thermal imaging channels), a laser rangefinder and an electronic ballistic computer, made in one block. The same sight is used on the Brazilian Cascavel combat vehicle. As a spare sight, the gunner has a telescopic device.

The 5C3-5 commander's sight differs from the gunner's sight in the absence of a laser rangefinder and an electronic ballistic computer. It is installed in the commander's turret and is connected to the cannon, as a result of which the commander can aim it at the selected target, followed by opening fire. For a circular view, he uses five periscope observation devices mounted around the perimeter of the turret. The engine compartment of the EE-T1 Osorio tank is located in the aft part of the hull. It has a West German 12-cylinder MWM TBO 234 diesel engine and a 2P 150 3000 automatic transmission in one unit that can be replaced in the field in 30 minutes.

The tank has a good squat: in 10 seconds it develops a speed of 30 km / h. The undercarriage includes six road wheels and three support rollers per side, driving and steering wheels. Like the German Leopard 2 tank, the tracks are equipped with removable rubber pads. The chassis suspension is hydropneumatic. On the first, second and sixth road wheels there are spring shock absorbers. The sides of the hull and elements of the undercarriage are covered with armored screens that provide additional protection against cumulative ammunition. The tank is equipped with an automatic fire extinguishing system in the combat and engine compartments. It can also be equipped with a system of protection against weapons of mass destruction, a heater, a navigation system and a device that signals crew members when the tank is exposed to a laser beam. For communication there is a radio station and a tank intercom. After appropriate training, the tank can overcome a water barrier up to 2 meters deep.

Medium tank EE-T1/T2 “Osorio”

The EE-T2 Osorio tank, unlike its predecessor, is armed with a 120-mm C.1 smoothbore gun, developed by specialists from the French state association 61AT. The ammunition load includes 38 unitary loading shots with two types of shells: armor-piercing feathered sub-caliber with a detachable pallet and multi-purpose (cumulative and high-explosive fragmentation).

12 shots are placed in the rear of the turret, and 26 in the front of the hull. The muzzle velocity of a 6,2-kilogram armor-piercing projectile is 1650 m / s, and a multipurpose one weighing 13,9 kg is 1100 m / s. The effective range of the first type of projectile against tanks reaches 2000 m. Auxiliary armament includes two 7,62-mm machine guns, one of which is paired with a cannon, and the second (anti-aircraft) is mounted on the roof of the tower. The fire control system includes the commander's panoramic sight UZ 580-10 and the gunner's periscope sight V5 580-19 manufactured by the French company 5R1M. Both sights are made with built-in laser rangefinders, which are connected to an electronic ballistic computer. The scopes' fields of view have stabilization independent of weapons.
