Should you buy a Nissan Leaf 30 kWh? Optional, the batteries are defective

PushEVs cited extensive research that shows Nissan Leaf's 30-kilowatt batteries lose about 10 percent of their capacity each year. That's more than three times faster than an electric Nissan with 24 kWh batteries. Nissan is now responding to the allegations.

A study by PushEVs examined 283 Nissan Leafy produced between 2011 and 2017. The cars had batteries with a capacity of 24 and 30 kWh. It turned out that:

  • The batteries in Leafs 30 kWh are more sensitive to the fast charge frequency (distance traveled),
  • LEAF batteries are 24 kWh more sensitive to age.

The 24kWh Nissan Leaf is expected to lose an average of about 3,1% battery capacity per year, while the 30kWh Leaf is expected to lose as much as 9,9% capacity. So a car with a smaller battery loses the first battery square (strip) after an average of 4,6 years, while a 30kWh Leaf loses it after 2,1 years.

What do you say Nissan? According to a statement released by GreenCarReports, the company is "investigating issues." Internet users, in turn, point out errors to researchers. In their opinion, LeafSpy provides inaccurate data.

Which electric Nissan Leaf should you buy?

The study above shows that the best choice is a car with a 24 kWh battery manufactured after 2015. Cars of the period had an upgraded "lizard battery" that degraded more slowly.

If you buy a model with a 30 kWh battery, be sure to charge up to 80 percent at fast charging stations. It is best to charge your car at home as often as possible.
