Subaru Forester 2.0 D CVT Sport Unlimited

Named after our forester, the Subaru Forester needs little introduction. It has everything Subaru is famous for: a boxer (turbodiesel) engine for its own sound, symmetrical all-wheel drive for off-roading and durability that is the benchmark even for Japanese cars. But from now on it has become even more!

You will first notice the aggressive front end of the car, followed by the LED technology in the daytime running lights and taillights. While all the traits of old proven ancestors have been preserved in Subaru, the forester still attracts a lot of attention. All are as well equipped as the test room. While we at Subaru have waited a long time for a suitable infotainment interface, the Starlink system was the right answer.

It works well as even the summer sun does not interfere with the view, it loves to connect to the phone, and the navigation does its job more than satisfactory. Harman-Kardon speakers bring the music to sleep, while the heated front seats pleasantly melt the fat on the buttocks. Wouldn't it be nice girls? The rear door is electrically movable, the rear bench, which can be split into a third, also allows switching the backrests with a button in the trunk, and an additional camera assists when reversing. Especially when driving off-road. Although the Forester also has permanent symmetrical four-wheel drive, so it can be called a stocky climber, the driver is assisted by electronics instead of the classic partial differential locks. They called it XMODE and, if necessary, it affects the operation of the engine, stability system and, of course, the transmission. This helps with tractive effort both uphill and downhill, when even experienced riders have their eyes open.

Don't worry, the Forester is still a great off-road vehicle that, with the right tires, can do a lot more than you might hope. Well, we have to point out a bit more about the gearbox, in our case an infinite CVT which Subaru calls Lineartronic. This is the first CVT that I could easily survive with, although I'm not exactly a fan of this principled technique where it always provides the right gear ratio. The reason for the better mood is the electronically tuned gears that mimic the operation of a classic automatic transmission, while reducing noise and the unpleasant feeling of slipping the clutch. Well, thanks to better soundproofing, Subaru has limited this feature so much that it's no longer annoying, at least in normal driving. The other song, however, goes full throttle, at which point we would still prefer a good automatic transmission. The engine is, as the saying goes, good, shows a lot of torque and can be a little less thirsty when consumed.

Our average test at very slow speeds was 7,6 liters per 100 kilometers, and on a normal lap we managed to reduce the average by 1,4 liters. It could be better - than the seats could be better, because with a relatively flat seat surface and leather upholstery, they require the co-driver to land on your lap in a dynamic right turn. Which, in its own way, would have been nice if we'd gone through the corner safely. The Subaru Forester remains indispensable in the field, but more fun in the urban jungle. The changes he has undergone lately are expected, but pleasant and desirable.

  • Don't worry, the Forester still offers all the technical features that make it great while keeping up with current fashion trends. In short: he is on the right track, and it's up to you whether it will be rubble or asphalt.
