Supertest: Volkswagen Passat Variant 2.0 TDI Highline

After the Golf, which we returned only with a heavy heart, we brought a new Passat to the garage. Then it dawned on us: damn it, we basically made a very good replacement! The new Passat shines in all its splendor in our service garage, polished and still free from the "irregularities" of the body. It is large, with a van in the back, elegant navy blue, trimmed in leather and wood and equipped with a modern 100-liter TDI engine. Ready for XNUMX Garage Miles.

As you read these lines, he is already well known in the newsroom, and there is not a single member of our team who has not made an urgent deal with him on the other side of the world. Preferably in some fashionable resort where swimming is the main occupation. ... Joking aside, the Passat unfortunately took its first ("introductory") steps on a business trip to Geneva, and then drove several times on German highways, Italian highways and Croatian highways. If we continue as we started, our Vetrich will cover the distance that the average Slovene will cover in four to five years, in just one year!

The fact that the keys are never in the newsroom is always a good sign. First of all, this can be attributed to carefully selected equipment. Only the appearance and the three-color dashboard (dark on top, light ocher on the bottom, and between them - wooden fittings, which dusted the editorial office the most with its cheap appearance) hides a radio with the ability to listen to CDs, a dual-channel automatic air conditioning and, most importantly, a long hot summer, a cooled closed box in front of the navigator came in handy.

The seats are immediately impressive: they look very sporty, but travel on them is more comfortable. The electric drive is adjustable, with the exception of the longitudinal installation, which requires a "classic" installation. Of course, we're looking forward to a spacious seating area (like in the Golf), lumbar tweaks and, above all, a leather / Alcantara combination that is (probably) the best. It looks good, it is luxurious, it does not slip in more dynamic corners.

And in winter we will be able to pretty much warm up the buttocks, since it has additional heating. ... Our super test Passat also has an electric parking brake (although our boss has already run after the car, as it is not enough to press a button quickly, but you need to take the time to press carefully and check if this technical innovation understands your purpose, otherwise you may be unpleasantly surprised), switchable ESP (jupiii, we look forward to the first snow), power windows and rear-view mirrors, cruise control (gold on long road trips), three-spoke steering wheel with radio and menu controls, ABS, four airbags and side curtains. ...

Hopefully we don't need these latest safety devices, although statistics say that after the Toyota Corolla Verso and Volkswagen Golf (which survived almost no accidents), we've probably already spent all the cards up our sleeves. Well, the supertest part of the car on the road (bad cleaning after an accident?). We took care that the supertest would not start the best one, who took care of the hole in the winter tire when driving on a wet track and on a bad one. visibility, so our matevzh had to drive at the first gas station. honestly spit into the hands of the service and (for the first time) use a replacement. Since the "reserve" is the same size as the other four tires, he was able to continue his journey, otherwise he would have had to look for another vulcanizer in such bad weather.

The comparison with the Golf is interesting since the Passat has exactly the same engine. If we found in the Golf that the 140 hp turbo diesel (direct injection, pump-injector system, turbocharger, charge air cooler) is even sporty, the Passat is a bit anemic. The culprit is, of course, weight, since the Passat Variant weighs 335 kilograms more than the Golf (we're talking about the weight of an empty car, of course), so the acceleration is less by a second and a hair. -like final speed.

Upset? Not at all, the Passat is very enjoyable to drive, with the right driver just as fast (although you can feel a lot of weight around corners, especially the fact that you're passing half of the living room behind you) and always pampering when it comes to long-distance fuel consumption. Well, make no mistake, the XNUMX-liter turbodiesel engine consumes little diesel and is much more thirsty when using engine oil, as we already noticed with the Golf. Therefore, it is important to be careful and check the amount of oil in the engine before every long ride.

The engine runs great above 2.000 rpm (when the turbo is breathing), in lower gears it always sticks to the seat and the right hand must be quick to get through the six gears of the gearbox as quickly as possible and thus follow the jumper. We only blame the engine (especially in the morning when you wake up the neighbors), the already mentioned oil consumption and operation below 2.000 rpm when it is almost clinically dead, and the gearbox is only for the fact that it is not good. We're already demanding, aren't we?

At the presentation of the version of the limousine, Leshnik said that the car is beautiful, but it is better to wait for the option, and this is really good luck. Well, after the first few miles with our (hey, it's already ours!) Supertest, all that remains is to join it. It was worth the wait.

Overall rating (345/420)

  • 140 turbodiesel horses and a six-speed transmission, a large trunk and rich equipment. More than the average driver could wish for, although the Passat is far from perfect. Good luck…

  • Exterior (14/15)

It doesn't matter if this is actually a nicer sedan for some, but most swear by the beautiful Variant.

  • Interior (124/140)

Good marks for roominess, driving position and large trunk, and less for rear seat temperature control.

  • Engine, transmission (37

    / 40)

Good compromise, only naughty drivers will need more power and a DSG gearbox.

  • Driving performance (82

    / 95)

While the Passat is generally in a good position on the road, it still feels like you're passing a lot of space behind you in the more dynamic corners. Thus, the Variant is slightly more sensitive to crosswinds.

  • Performance (20/35)

You will never be first in line - read: work in a crowd with a slow ride, of course.

  • Security (34/45)

There are many active and passive safety systems, a slightly worse measurement result was recorded only when braking on winter tires.

  • Economy

Moderate fuel consumption, slightly higher purchase price of a new car, but also more money when selling a used one.
