Suzuki SX4 1.6 4 × 4 Deluxe

So, UXC! At Suzuki, with the Swift and Ignis among the smallest, and the Jimny and Grand Vitaro among the SUVs, the SX4 is dedicated to "its" class. UXC stands for Urban Cross Car, which, given its features, can be interpreted as an urban crossover car. Something between a small car, a limousine van, a limousine and an SUV.

In short: the SX4 is an urban SUV. As such, this is not a typical representative of any class of car. As a result, there are very few of his closest rivals. In fact, there is only one, but this one (Fiat Sedici) is the result of a collaboration between Suzuki and Fiat. Sedici also has the SX4 and vice versa.

The SX4 is probably also the only car of its size (4 meters long) that you will happily park in your backyard, from the wheels to the muddy roof rack. What to do if beautiful black metallic flaunts under the dirt. Let it be seen that the driver took advantage of the SX. This is noticeable at first glance: a raised belly, an SUV's optics (bright details on both bumpers in the form of aluminum should not blind the eyes, it is plastic) and, in the case of the test model, four-wheel drive. Drive the weapon until the weekend in any weather and regardless of the ground.

The confusion of genes from several classes of cars in the SX4 means Suzuki had to make a compromise. They are the least noticeable in appearance, which reminds many of a small Mercedes-Benz ML-Class, Mini or something else. Formally, let's just ignore Sedition, it has no competition. The appearance is both an SUV and a station wagon.

Liked; when dirty it is pleasantly aggressive; when clean it can be a regular family limousine. With a total length of 4 meters, it is larger than the new Opel Corsa and Fiat Grande Punta, and these are just two new small cars. Thanks to the raised belly, the SX sits high, there is no problem with headroom in the front seats, as the roof is high and the feeling is similar to sitting in a limousine van or SUV. There is enough space behind the wheel, which is unfortunately only height adjustable (despite the 14 4.590.000 1.6 tolar required for the 4 4 × XNUMX Deluxe test).

At the back, two adult passengers with a maximum height of 180 centimeters can sit without any problems, since taller ones will already have problems with a too low ceiling. The seats are just hard (soft if you like), the grip could be better. When you think about price, the choice of materials for the dashboard is disappointing as everything is made of hard plastic. The rest of the buttons are logical and provide good ergonomics. Plastic inserts that imitate metal try to eliminate the monotony of the passenger compartment.

The interior lacks what you would expect from a car in this price range. The trip computer (screen in the middle of the dashboard under the windshield) can only display the current fuel consumption. If it had any other function, you would also criticize its performance, as the toggle button is on the right side of the screen, which requires leaning forward and taking your hand off the steering wheel ... There could be more storage space, front passenger the compartment could be lit. It's also all that we lacked in front of the front seats, which are otherwise heated and weigh every tolar invested on these cold mornings.

It has air conditioning, the radio is also understood in MP3 format and somehow from CDs, the driver's seat is also height adjustable. The interior will especially appeal to those who like to sit high. The Deluxe equipment also pampers with a smart key. There are little black buttons on the front and rear doors that need to be pressed and the SX4 will unlock if the key is in range (pocket). Also useful because the SX4 can be ignited without a key.

The genes of a very useful sedan fade when you look at the trunk, where the base 290 liters is not much more than the trunk volume in the Renault Clio (288 liters), Fiat Grande Punto (275 liters), Opel Corsa (285) and Peugeot 207 (270 liters). . The 305-litre Citroën C3 and 380-litre Honda Jazz are even bigger, as is the 337-litre Ford Fusion, to mention just enough small cars (including limousine vans) to create an image that the SX4 doesn't stand out from the rest. medium size download. At least not in the way one would expect in terms of looks.

The boot lip is quite high, the tracks reduce the useful width of the load compartment, which must be tolerated when folding the seats (no problem) so that the seats fold down to take up space behind the front seats and thus reduce the useful length of the load compartment.

Because a suit doesn't make a man a man, even the look of an SX4 SUV doesn't make it a (soft) SUV. The plastic sill and fender guards and the aluminum exterior of both bumpers are just decorations you probably don't want to put between the first branch. However, the SX4 is more suited to country roads and rougher roads than all of the above. Because it's taller, there's no need to worry about rocks or other obstructions that could damage the front bumper spoilers and other critical parts of the exhaust system or whatever on the way back.

The SX4 also stands out from the crowd with all-wheel drive, which it uses almost everywhere. I-AWD (Intelligent All Wheel Drive) is a newly developed system that transfers power as needed between the front and rear wheels via a plate clutch (sensors detect the possibility of wheel spin). Basically, the front wheelset is driven (mainly due to lower fuel consumption), and if necessary (slip), the electronics also distribute power to the rear pair. The electronic center differential lock (power transfer between the front and rear axles 50:50) takes place directly on more difficult terrain, such as snow and mud.

Switch between all three drive modes (if the SX4 includes four-wheel drive!) With a switch in the center console, and the selected program is marked with an icon in the instrument panel. The all-wheel drive Suzuki SX4 is an excellent companion on gravel roads, delivering tons of fun on dirt roads and, above all, eliminating the distrust of route transportability. The SX4 moves forward when others give up.

The suspension does not perform as expected on paved roads as short bumps are transmitted to the passenger compartment via vibration. Much better on longer bumps in the road, which the suspension swallows with great pleasure. Expectations of a soft suspension and large body tilt around corners soon become meaningless, as the SX4 is not a soft road cruiser, but performs much more reliably than its design would suggest.

The test model was powered by a 1-liter engine, which we thought was successful at hiding its 6 kilowatts (79 hp) as it has no distortion and does not respond to jolts. However, the unit will satisfy calm drivers who do not put overtaking on the agenda. The gear lever transitions from gear to gear is slightly more complex (more force), although its accuracy cannot be disputed. You just have to get used to the harder shifting, which is especially noticeable when the transmission is not hot, and mostly always when shifting from first to second gear and vice versa, which can only bother you when driving in city crowds.

The SX4 with all-wheel drive is a special, outgrown class of small cars. This will be of interest to anyone who has four-wheel drive babies (Panda, Ignis ...) are too small. Suzuki has the answer for anyone who likes to get out of high mountain residences without breaking snow in the morning. And for those who like to jump until the weekend, regardless of the weather and traffic. Don't worry about something falling out of the car when you move on the cart rails. However, without all-wheel drive. . do you need such a car?

It is true that it looks like an SUV and is much easier to park than most similar (large) vehicles. ... Well, maybe this is what you are looking for.

Overall rating (None / 420)

  • The SX4 is a compromise and may be the only choice for some. The little XNUMXWD car is second to none

with front-wheel drive, however, there is very little of it. Also better and above all cheaper.

  • exterior

The appearance is unique. A real small city SUV.

  • interior

There is a lot of space in the front seats, relatively good ergonomics, only the choice of materials is lame.

  • Engine, gearbox

The gearbox needs to be warmed up, then the shift is better. Sleepy engine.

  • Driving performance

Surprisingly good considering the hull's distance from the ground. The steering wheel is too indirect.

  • Ability

It cannot boast of flexibility, but it can handle a fairly high end speed. The fifth gear could have been longer.

  • Security

Favorable stopping distance, a bunch of airbags and ABS. ESP is now standard on this model. The tester did not have it yet.

  • Economy

The price of the all-wheel drive test model is high, and the loss in value is noticeable for Suzuki.

    Pump stoppages are also common.
