Welding and neural networks

Specialists from the Finnish University of Technology Lappeenranta have developed a unique automatic welding system. A technology based on neural networks that can independently correct errors, adapt to changing conditions and conduct the welding process in accordance with the project.

The sensor system in the new technology controls not only the welding angle, but also the temperature at the melting point of the metal and the shape of the weld. The neural network receives data on an ongoing basis, which makes a decision to change the parameters during the welding process. For example, when arc welding in a shielding gas environment, the system can simultaneously change the current and voltage, the speed of movement and the setting of the welding machine.

If there are errors or defects, the system can immediately correct all these parameters, so that the resulting link is of the highest quality. The system is designed to act as a high-class specialist - a welder who quickly responds and corrects any shortcomings that may arise during welding.
