Maintenance and care of trimming and carpentry tongs
| Keep the pliers in good condition by only using them on wire or nails of the size they were designed for. If you try to use them on thicker items, you may damage the cutting edges. | |
| Resist the temptation to use pliers as a hammer unless they have a special flat jaw feature. You can damage the pliers or miss a nail and hit your hand. |
 | Be sure to clean the tongs after use. Wipe with a cloth or stiff brush and wash the grease off the cutting edges with soapy water. Dry thoroughly to prevent rust formation. |
 | Lubricating the jaws and pincer hinges with a drop of light oil before removing them will help them last longer and prevent corrosion. |
 | Store the pliers so that their cutting edges do not come into contact with other tools. A toolbox with compartments will do, or you can hang them on the wall. |
 | The tool roll is also a good storage place. Separate pockets prevent the pliers from colliding with other tools and protect their cutting edges from damage. Thick leather ones provide better protection. |
 | Store the tool box or roll of tools in a dry place such as a shed, garage or workshop to prevent rust. |
