Technical description Volkswagen Golf II

The model known as the popular deuce is by far the most popular car of the concern found on our roads, probably thanks to private importers, for whom the Golf is the flagship model and was most often imported in the 90s and is currently imported today. The model was called MK 2 and was produced in five-door and three-door bodies. Production of the 4-wheel drive SYNCRO model also began with the second two, it was at that time the first car in this class with all-wheel drive.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

The car, like the previous version, is fairly easy to assemble, but the deuce has additional elements, such as an anti-roll bar in some models, which the poorer versions did not have. The range of engines and equipment for the model is also richer, power versions found in selected models include carburetor, single-point injection to multi-point diesel fuel injection, and the electric prototype is also a curiosity. The interior finishes are much better, the fine materials used in production are more pleasant to the touch, and their appearance is even acceptable today. Depending on the model, we also have many models of cabins and interior trim. The durability of the car's finishing materials is amazing, the handle on the model from the start of production today is the same color as on the day it left the factory, which makes you think a lot. Similarly, interior trim, all leather and upholstery in well-used cars are in very good condition. The power units of all models are solid and flexible enough, they accelerate without problems and overcome climbs. In general, the GOLF 2 cars found on our roads can be divided into well-maintained and so-called. During the heyday of imports, moving fragments are brought into the country, collected and stored in a warehouse. That is why, because of such folding, it is sometimes difficult to choose any part for the car. In general, the car can be recommended for its appearance and technical characteristics.

TYPICAL FAULTS

Steering system

In the steering system, close attention should be paid to the steering mechanism, in the version without power steering, there were constant knocks in the gearbox, which did not significantly affect driving safety, but the comfort of greater neglect in this matter in extreme cases even causes loss of control (for one of the golfers, the reason for this state of affairs turned out to be a scattered drive gear bearing, due to which the drive gear moved away from the entire rack). Gears with a power drive, strong enough, backlash was occasionally found on the internal rods, however, close attention should be paid to the tightness of the gear, because. carelessness in this matter is most often the cause of corrosion of the toothed rod.

Transmission

Twos have pretty solid gearboxes, but shifting difficulties have been observed many times. This was mainly due to the poor condition of the clutch or gearshift mechanism. Sometimes there were problems with bearings that started to work loudly in one of the golfers, the differential jumped and the gearbox jammed completely, but this was caused by sloppy repairs, not a factory defect. The rubber covers of the propeller shaft are cracking / photo 7 / often change the bearings of the front hubs / photo 8 /

Clutch

However, with many kilometers run, the springs of the clutch disc wear out (Fig. 6 /), the clutch engagement mechanisms jam and the release bearing starts to work loudly. Extreme cases are the complete destruction of the clutch due to poor adjustment.

ENGINE

The engine is a well-developed element and in all versions problems usually appear in the injection engine control system, the automatic air damper often stops working in carburetor versions, cracks in the thermostat housing (photo 3 /), cable breaks in the controls often occur. Often the wire broke in the insulation, which made troubleshooting very difficult; if the cars were operated on the wrong fuel, the nozzle could jam. A crack in the exhaust manifold on carbureted versions was also a very common occurrence. Vacuum tubes (thin hoses) often clogged, causing engine problems, and the exhaust manifold cover often corroded.

Hamulce

The braking system has been improved, disc and mixed versions have been used. However, discs in front, drums in the back are much more popular. A typical malfunction is rotting or falling off of the plates pressing the pads, manifested by knocking during braking, sticking of the cams in the drum version, and in the version with rear discs, sticking of the handbrake lever at the caliper, causing the handbrake to work continuously while driving. At high mileage, the piston rubber linings in the brake calipers are under pressure. what causes corrosion /photo4/ also in the drum system at the back the elements are blurred /photo5/

Body

Well-polished sheet metal, sufficiently resistant to corrosion / photo2 / there are also trouble-free cars with native varnish without rust! Pay attention to the elements of fastening the suspension to the body (suspension struts, rear beam), joining sheets in places exposed to water (wheel arches, sills). Broken door handles are quite common.

Electrical installation

Pay attention to the condition of the headlights, which are often corroded in two (mirror inside), all kinds of elements exposed to a hot engine (cable connectors) can be damaged, all electrical connections are corroded, manifested by a green coating. Domes and cables are changed quite often /photo1/

interior

The most common malfunctions are the upholstery of the seats is torn, especially in versions with bucket seats, quite often the plastic plays on the bumps in the road, adjusting the position of the air intakes, and the air intakes themselves like to crack. Quite often, door handles come off, mirror adjustment breaks (too much force is applied to “adjust” the position).

SUMMARY

Summarizing everything, Golf 2 is a successful development of the first version, enriched with new elements and drive units, a number of innovations have appeared that have affected ease of use (for example, power steering), environmental protection conditions have been improved - the catalyst was widely used. The injector appeared not only in an improved version, but also began to displace carburetors as standard. The ergonomics of the cabin have been improved, the user's well-being has been improved through the use of more parts and better interior materials. The seats have been improved over its predecessor, the car is just prettier.

To summarize, the deuce is a car for everyone, from the young enthusiast who loves more power, through women who love comfort and convenience, and ending with older people who love simple and proven cars.
