Technical description Volkswagen Polo III

VW Polo is one of the smallest cars of the concern, only the Lupo model is smaller than it. The car is available in classic and standard versions. The first version is a sedan with a clearly marked tailgate, the rest are three-door and five-door versions.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

Noteworthy is a car with a proven design, very carefully made, solid in terms of bodywork and paintwork. The cars, even from the beginning of production, are very well maintained, of course, with the exception of those that have passed and have a significant mileage.

Steering system

Leaks from the power steering system are not uncommon, and there are often large backlashes on the gear rack (Photo 1).

Transmission

There may be problems with the noisy operation of the gearbox due to bearings, and leaks are also not uncommon (Photo 2). The gearbox suspension cushion also breaks, so it is worth checking whether it is tightened correctly, because the mount is often loosened, which leads to damage to the cushion.

Clutch

No recurring faults other than normal wear and tear were noted.

ENGINE

Engines from tiny gasoline (Photo 3) to diesel engines are very well designed and durable, there are also many to choose from, from tiny but weaker to large and with good power, which, however, translates into higher fuel consumption. Sometimes problems can occur due to a clogged throttle body. Quite often, thermostat housings are torn, causing frequent overheating of the engine, which operates on the so-called small circuit (Fig. 4).

Hamulce

There have been no recurring failures other than normal wear and tear, but if basic maintenance is neglected, problems with the rear axle brakes, especially the handbrake mechanism, can occur.

Body

A well-made body (Photo 5) does not corrode much, even parts of early production do not have signs of developed corrosion, but they can be and this happens quite often, corrosive coating of the surface at the junction of the thresholds at the lower edge of the windows, on the tailgate in version 2 and 5 doors near the glass. Corrosion of elements is often observed, as well as on the battery base (Photo 6).

Electrical installation

Sometimes the mechanism of the central locking of the tailgate (Photo 7) and the lifting of the windows are faulty, but these are isolated cases, and then there may be problems with the equipment, the radiator fan, the wiper motor, etc. A common case in old halves is coil damage (Photo 8).

Suspension

The suspension is simple, kingpins and rubber elements are the most common. Sometimes suspension springs break, and sometimes there may be leaks from shock absorbers, but only with high mileage.

Interior trim materials are durable, not subject to contamination, the opening mechanism of 3-door versions can sometimes fail, preventing the seat from being moved and letting passengers into the back seat. With high mileage, the gearbox cover may wear out, but it cannot be called an indispensable element, so the interior can be considered perfectly executed.

SUMMARY

The car is pleasant to drive and drive, the interior is functional and comfortable, all controls are within reach and visibility. Dynamic engines provide decent performance and driving a car, even long distances, does not cause any problems. Durable components allow you to achieve significant mileage, and car care improves this result even more. People who intend to buy a Polo should carefully check the history of the car, because quite often a car has a large number of owners, which means that the mileage can be quite high.
