In subsequent years of production, the focus was on improving design and functionality.

TECHNICAL ASSESSMENT

The car is very popular due to the good quality and history of the model. Many users are so accustomed to Escort that they only change new models, which speaks for itself. The car is technically successful, simple design, few parts subject to serious damage, and the fact that parts are available almost everywhere for decent money, make the car so popular. Very old cars and you have to be aware of the fact that there can be heavily worn and rusted cars, although many Mk4s are so well maintained that it's hard to find signs of significant wear.

TYPICAL FAULTS

Steering system

Considerable mileage and age of the car entails serious problems, knocking out the rack and bearings may require regeneration or replacement. The outer poles are often replaced.

Transmission

Typically, after a longer run, leaks appear around the axle shafts, sometimes the gear shift mechanism is damaged, which is manifested by excessive play of the gear lever and difficult gear shifting. Cardan shaft covers often break, with a high mileage of the car, it may be necessary to replace the hinges.

Clutch

High mileage is favorable for breaking out the clutch disc, slipping, which is manifested by jerks when starting off and uneven operation of the entire actuator, it also often sticks.

ENGINE

Very well designed engines provide high mileage without the need for overhaul of major engine components. Different power gives you a choice. There are problems with the thermostat, often the water pump needs to be replaced. The valve cover is very rusty. There may be leaks under the cover and around the shaft seals. / A photo. 1/ Exhaust system and oil sump are also susceptible to corrosion with higher mileage, since cars are old, it is to be expected that they can be repaired, so-called. country methods, as shown in the photo. / A photo. 2, fig. 3, fig. four /

Electrical system

Ignition wires and coils are located in the rear of the engine compartment, causing them to become dirty and damaged, and it is quite common to have problems with an inoperative steering column switch. Several times there were problems with the ignition lock, due to which it was not possible to start the engine, or vice versa, the inability to turn off the engine. High mileage starter needs to be replaced

rotor bearings. Electrical wiring is often rigid and advanced, which in extreme cases can lead to short circuits and fires. / A photo. 5 /
