Tesla Model 3 - the optimal speed on the highway? Nyland: 130 km/h with 50 kW chargers, 190 km/h with Ionity • ELECTRIC CARS

Youtuber Bjorn Nyland decided to calculate the optimal highway speed for the Tesla Model 3 Performance. His calculations show that 130 km / h is optimal if we have 50 kW charging stations (as in Poland). For Supercharger or Ionity stations, the optimum speed is 190 km / h.

After recently measuring the power consumption of a Tesla Model 3 Performance versus driving speed, Bjorn Nyland calculated that if we have an infrastructure with charging stations serving a maximum of 50 kW, it makes no sense to exceed 130 km / h.. Of course, we can go faster, but then the average speed throughout the journey will be lower - because we will have to recharge more often.

This description is quite suitable for Poland, where today we have four Tesla Supercharger charging stations. The rest of the infrastructure is Greenway Polska, Lotos, Tauron or Rawicom (Chademo) stations.

With classic v2 blowers up to 120 kW - the vast majority of blowers and cars - Nyland recommends 150 km/h. True, at 190 km/h the average speed is higher, but in relation to 150 km/h the difference is small, and above this speed we We lose access to active cruise control.

Finally, with the Tesla Model 3 with firmware 2019.20 (or newer), which allows charging up to 200 kW, the optimal driving speed is 190 km / h. However, it should be added that today we will only reach 200 kW at the Ionity or v3 Supercharger charging stations. The latter are not yet available in Europe, and in the US we can only find them in two places.

Nyland was surprised that 190 km / h so often turned out to be the optimal speed of movement. Why not 200 km / h? Due to significantly higher energy consumption - 50,1 kWh / 100 km vs. 39,3 kWh / 100 km for 190 km / h - and significantly higher heat losses (7 vs. 4 percent).
