Test: Audi A1 Sportback 30 TFSI S line S tronic // About bottles and poison

At the end of last year, Audi had a lot of work: presentations of new products continued. With all the “electricity” (e-tron) and “lifestyle” (Q3), they therefore quickly sorted out the smallest, that is, the second generation A1. Automotive times are changing and there is no longer a need to deal with such small cars, as the number of buyers in the small (family) car class who would be interested in a car of this premium size has also declined. We can also figure this out when we look for suitable competitors in this class.

And if the A1 marketers have not dedicated themselves (or have invested so much in the start of sales), the fact that this is a great creation cannot be influenced in any way. Audi engineers have designed the second generation A1 as seriously as any other model. Therefore, their smallest ones are perhaps less noticeable - also because of the rather elaborate shape, which is only a slight evolution of the first generation. But it has everything an Audi buyer expects.

Of course, as I said in the introduction, this is a small car. Which is great for urban use. They made sure that there was enough space in the front seats for the larger cars, which are difficult to find such a place in this type of car. The second Audi A1 is only in the five-door version and I can say that the rear seat space is still quite acceptable, even entering the door does not cause serious problems for larger passengers. With the A1, only two can go on a longer trip with more luggage, but the trunk can't work wonders at this size.

However, the main task of this Audi is not to shine with space, but to offer all the goodies of modern automotive technology. Thus, the interior is certainly an important chapter in the purchase process of future owners. The list of different equipment is long., and not only to improve the well-being in the cabin. The list of accessories also includes many electronic devices for safer and more comfortable driving and connection to the outside world. You can also partially verify the possible equipment options for this vehicle by examining our technical data.

If its base price still seems in line with expectations, then everything you would want from this smallest Audi goes beyond the list of accessories the test model had. The spoiled car tester would like more, as he missed out on quite a few extras that seem pretty common even with competitors from the less premium part of the offering in this class. What is it? Well, for example: get into your pocket and open the car by pressing the usual "remote" key., a smartphone connection that will also open up the world in A1 and enable Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to be displayed, as well as a navigation program that will turn the center screen into a world connection.

Then even a central digital display with gauges and customizable content would be more convincing. But that would raise the price by a little less than two thousand if we wanted to mirror the navigation content in the middle, or a thousand if we were only thinking about the “Audi smartphone interface,” that is, the interface for smartphones.

In any case, the headlights with LED technology deserve a commendation from the list of equipment A1 we tested! They are a great addition to a safer night trip. Together with shading, they allow for less stressful driving, including due to reliable dimming and better illumination of only those sections of the road in front of the car where the light does not interfere with oncoming drivers.

The richer offering of electronic safety assistants in the A1 also depends on what we check in the equipment list when choosing a car. We had serial lane control or warning that we were leaving. In addition, front and rear parking assistants with an optional reversing camera and adaptive cruise control, which, together with the automatic transmission, takes care of stopping when driving in a column.

Our A1 was powered by the smallest engine ever, a turbocharged three-cylinder petrol, but with slightly more power output than the base version. (25 TFSI with 95 "horses"). For normal road trips, this 110 “horsepower” engine is enough, especially since it pairs well with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Thus, driving at the maximum speed allowed on Slovenian roads is enjoyable and effortless, and the promised top speed also promises good progress on German motorways. The Audi A1 currently only offers two different engines: both turbocharged, a larger and more powerful 1,5-litre engine, and 150 'horses'.

In fact, the engine offer is for acquaintances from across the Volkswagen Group, and for the A1 (at least for now?) turbodiesels are no longer available. Given our "baby"'s powerful liter engine and fairly good average fuel consumption test results, Audi probably won't show much mourning for diesel buyers (of course, their "abstinence" should also be understood as a reaction to serious problems caused by illegal programs on some of their engine options, and let me re-emphasize - the motor equipment is completely in style and will satisfy even those who would be willing to invest a little more in equipment and then save on consumption ...

The A1 is in its true element as soon as we take a bend. The road position really won't be a problem, which provides otherwise solidly wide and not too large (only 16 inches) tires. The optional sports chassis is not a guarantee of comfort. But on winding roads, the smallest Audi do well, you just need to find slightly less jammed or ruined Slovenian routes to places where there isn't too much traffic. If you come across an A1 and a laughing driver (or even a driver) in one of them, this is probably a perfectly normal picture!

With a slightly more powerful engine, the smile on the driver's face is likely to extend to the top of the ears, but then this premium Audi would be even more expensive, and therefore more expensive. It is no longer quite cheap, and therefore it will remain an exclusive piece of equipment on Slovenian roads. In any case, the idea in the name applies to it: the poison is stored in small bottles, and its effectiveness depends on how much we are willing to subtract for it. As with the new generation Audi A1.

Overall rating (427/600)

  • The smallest Audi is exactly what completes the premium program in the city car class. Anyone who likes a "little bottle" can pour a strong "poison" into it.

  • Cab and trunk (70/110)

The design of the second generation has not changed significantly, there is a little more space in the cabin.

  • Comfort (79

    / 115)

Due to the sporty appearance, comfort suffers slightly. The interior feel is excellent and the materials used are of a high standard. The connectivity depends on the openness of the pocket when buying, if you have invested more here, you can even use the connection with smartphones that competitors already have in hardware versions with a small surcharge.

  • Transmission (58

    / 80)

A base engine with a little more power for day-to-day use, but nothing more.

  • Driving performance (78

    / 100)

Good road position and excellent handling replaces a slightly stiff and uncomfortable chassis. All electronic security and other equipment at a high premium level.

  • Security (86/115)

At a high level, even with headlights that illuminate the road well at night.

  • Economy and environment (55

    / 80)

One of the reasons for buying this Audi can also be very moderate fuel consumption and, as a result, less impact on the environment.

Driving pleasure: 3/5

  • It lacks a more powerful engine to qualify as a small rocket, but the A1 handles corners well.

We praise and reproach

easy control of the infotainment system, transparent menus

convenient location on the road

ergonomics; digital gauges, seats

production

headlights and headlights

the rear gets dirty quickly, so the rear view is limited because dirt also accumulates on the reversing camera

quite stiff and only conditionally comfortable suspension (on good road surfaces)
