Test: Audi A8 L 50 TDi quattro

Many do not understand the latter. It's not that he doesn't like cars made for successful businessmen, but many people don't understand why they are so expensive or should be. But it's not just about cars. Last but not least, passengers on an Economy Class and Business Class or First Class aircraft arrive at their destination at the same time. Which, of course, means it's not a matter of time, it's a matter of comfort. This can be understood as more space or fewer people and, as a result, noise around or even better food. We are different people and some like it, others like it.

It's the same in the automotive world. Most of them have a car for transportation from point A to point B. Well, I'll correct myself, most of them have one, but only Slovenes ... (that only this one will be better than a neighbor's) than if you were driving worse (or at least cheaper) you would eat better. But that's another story, back to the cars.

Some people spend an hour or two a day in the car, others several times more. Some earn so much, others several times more. And the latter then, logically, will also spend several times more. I am writing this because we can also use the word astronomical to price this A8 test, but at the same time we must ask ourselves who is astronomical for and who is it completely favorable for? For the average citizen or for a successful (European) businessman who makes millions in profits?

Then you should look at the car from a different or even a third angle. If you check the box that you can arrive at your destination even in the worst car, then it is when driving a car that the difference in driving quality at the end of a long journey is very noticeable. It is true that many people think that the badge is the most expensive on expensive cars (which is also true), but the content is different. Comfort, performance, and the fact that new cars can be driven virtually alone. And if we end up arguing about the price: some people buy such a car also because of status, because of the experience, or simply because they can afford it. On this, the question of the price must be resolved. In any case, this is a topic for those who cannot afford it!

To apologize for a car that costs a little more (well, several times more) than a regular family car, let's write that the difference in price is also due to, or primarily, technology. In terms of filling, such a business car is different. Last but not least, the Audi A8 can drive itself even where we cannot imagine it. Due to legal regulations and, above all, ambiguity, this will not happen soon, but it can.

Which, of course, means that the ingredients in him are expensive, since he is not yet allowed to drive alone, and also unnecessary. But his designers decided so, and now everything is as it is.

And if I finally touch the car now - the new Audi A8 brings a revolution that is hidden from view. In terms of design, some might want more differentiation, but since this is a business class car, the design isn't worth the risk. The Audi A8 is a relatively unremarkable or rather unremarkable car. Some even like it and think about it, while others do not, but they prefer to choose a car with fewer circles (colored or just silver) on the front grille.

The core values of the Audi A8 are hidden in its guts. Large 20-inch wheels, long torso and headlights are visible to the naked eye. Yes, headlights are special. Already the latest to greet Hasselhoff in Knight Rider style, and on the test A8, the headlights were special too. Officially they are called matrix headlights with HD LED laser function, and unofficially they are headlights that work day and night. Literally. It is true, however, that they do it so intensively that sometimes or after some time of driving, their actions are already a little disturbing. The electronics tries to illuminate as much of the road as possible in front of the driver, while, of course, removing the beam of light where it can interfere. So, the car in front of us, or the car in front of us, or something shining. This, of course, means that the headlights are constantly flashing here and there, the LED segments are turning on and off. It will be unpleasant for someone, someone will like it, but it is true that they shine magnificently. And something else is very important - it is obvious that they take very good care of other road users, because, unlike similar headlights, there are no claims on drivers. So while they're restless, thumbs up for the headlights.

However, these Audi A8s are of course "not just headlights". First of all, its main content is luxury. The seats are armchair-like (although they weren't the best in the test car), the steering wheel is a work of art (and while the touchpad Mercedes steering wheel seems like the best solution), the engine isn't. the most powerful too. The last thing we are different people, but when we have to pay for fuel, many people close one eye or one ear when they have to listen to the sound of a diesel engine and raise that smelly lever on the gas. station. But if and where, then the new A8 makes it even easier. Acoustic soundproofing is at an enviable level, and the engine is only really audible inside when starting up or accelerating more forcefully, there is more or less silence between the two. Or treat yourself to a Bang & Olufsen XNUMXD surround sound system. It is controlled by next generation touch screens - they require a two-step press, which avoids accidental pressing, and at the same time, you can feel the feedback on your finger when we actually pressed the virtual button. Not to mention entries in the navigator or phone book; the bottom of the screen turns into a touchpad where we can write letters on top of each other, but the system basically recognizes everything. However, the screen is also more than always messy due to such reduction, including its surroundings; In any case, piano lacquer is sensitive to dust and fingerprints. Therefore, if such things bother you, there will always be a rag on hand to clean the screen and its surroundings. Audi is obviously aware of this too, as there is even a command or option in the menu to clear the screen. Only this one is getting dark and waiting for us to clean it.

As is the case with most business sedans, especially those with the acronym L (which stands for long wheelbase, which matches up with plenty of knee room for gentlemen in the rear seats), the A8 L also makes driving comfortable and easy for the driver, but nothing too fancy. Many sports cars provide more adrenaline fun, for some more overall fun, and for some a shorter car in the first place, less stress and fear of parking. To lighten up the rear - the A8 boasts 8-wheel steering, which means the rear wheels also steer a bit, and therefore the A13 L's turning radius (which is 8 centimeters longer than the base A5,172's 4 meters long) is the same , as is the much smaller A8. At the same time, the A8 offers a new era of active (air) suspension that swallows potholes in the roads much more effectively, and if the worst is ahead - in the event of a side impact from a foreign car, the AXNUMX will automatically raise the car to the door, not to the door.

To prevent this from happening, the Audi A8, of course, has a host of other safety systems. One of them is also assistance in avoiding collisions at the intersection. The car monitors oncoming traffic, and if you want to turn around and force the car, it warns loudly and boils. But it also happens when we just want to move forward a little at an intersection. Result: the car got scared, and so did the driver. But the important thing is that we survived.

This car needs a lot more than just getting started. It is designed to cover kilometers of highway, with which even "only" 286 "horses" is not a problem. Even a slightly sportier ride on winding roads is not a burden on the new A8 (precisely because of the already mentioned four-wheel steering), which boasts several such large and luxurious, but above all long sedans. And now a fact for those who are interested in almost everything - the test A8 consumed an average of eight liters of diesel fuel per 100 kilometers, and on a standard circle only 5,6 liters per hundred kilometers. Which means he can also be frugal, right? But I think that the person who pays 160 thousand euros for this is not particularly interested.

Overall rating (511/600)

  • Definitely one of the best (if not the best) large series cars at the moment. However, there must be a bit more equipment to score five, and most of all, another engine under the hood.

  • Cab and trunk (99/110)

A very large car that really pampers the rear passengers with its spaciousness.

  • Comfort (104

    / 115)

Again, the rear passengers will like it the most, but it will not interfere with the driver and passenger.

  • Transmission (63

    / 80)

Proven diesel engine, excellent drive and excellent sound insulation

  • Driving performance (90

    / 100)

Dimensions are adequate, with air suspension and full steering.

  • Security (101/115)

The assistance systems are more vigilant than the driver himself, but we would like more.

  • Economy and environment (54

    / 80)

It is certainly not a cheap purchase, but whoever can afford it will opt for a quality car.
