Test: Audi Q3 35TFSI S line S tronic // Just an adult

Although in the previous generation we wrote that this is somehow useful for the family, it was rather arbitrary: if there are not too many children in the family and if they went on vacation, especially on skis, with a careful choice of luggage and roofs. rack. But the inches of increment he got when the generation changed Q3, a lot has changed here.

In the previous third quarter, a family of three really didn't get a chance to go skiing for a week without a roof rack – unless they wanted to bring skis with them instead of renting them, of course. The new Q3 can do this easily, even if one of the participants is snowboarding. What's more: with a little organization and careful planning, you could squeeze in up to four days of skiing if you just sat dry in your back.

The increase in length with which the Q3 has advanced well over the previous generation Q5 is partly visible in the knees of those sitting in the back seat and is very evident in the trunk. In the first case, of course, it should be noted that it is good that the sum of the heights of those sitting one after the other does not exceed three and a half meters (and even then it is quite close), and in the Second, the suitcase is now not only impressive in size, but also quite comfortable equipped with hooks, sufficiently sturdy.

Because he had a test Audi Q3 designation S Line, had not only a sportier shape and chassis (more on this later), but also sportier front seats. They are great for long journeys and the ergonomics for the driver are excellent overall. Fully digital gauges combined with large center display and system controller MMI they make this infotainment system very convenient (including entering destinations in navigation), and since the Q3 also had Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, it can be very good friends with the rest of the driver's digital life, which is usually built around his smartphone.

The rest of the cabin is clearly from Audi: it may not be full of wild design moves, but it is cozy for those who love this brand, neat and decorated with enough accents not to get bored. There's plenty of room for small items (but we'd like more USB connectivity), the air conditioning is excellent, and the driving experience is a nice mix of lightness and sporty cockpit ambiance due to the very tall center console. Since the transmission is automatic (dual clutch), there is no need to deal with Audi's long clutch pedal travel, so a comfortable driving position can be found immediately.

The automatic transmission matches the engine perfectly. The 30TFSI designation, of course, does not mean a 3-liter turbo engine (although such a QXNUMX would do)but not even the most powerful two-liter four-cylinder that doesn't care capable of producing healthy 110 kilowatts or 150 "horses"... Since such a Q3 is neither the smallest nor the lightest (but this is also because there was no all-wheel drive Quattro on the test, otherwise in terms of weight in quite tolerable frames), he has not the easiest job with thisbut since the automatic transmission facilitates quick and imperceptible gear changes, and the sound insulation is good, it still remains quite powerful.

This means that such a Q3 is not an athlete, but it can always be faster than average pace, decisive enough even at German highway speeds and at the same time moderate consumption with moderate driving. 6,7 liters on our normal lap is about a liter and a half more. (or slightly less) than a comparable diesel would consume, and considering it was shod with winter tires during the Q3 test, this figure is more than satisfactory. Of course: if you boldly hurry up, the consumption will also be higher.

Since the engine is not overly powerful, the fact that the Q3 was "only" front-wheel drive did not bother me. Moreover: even on snow-covered mountain roads (of course, also because of the high-quality winter tires in which he was wearing) he felt very good, only some of the snow fun provided by all-wheel drive simply could not afford.

The Q3 test had more equipment package S linewhich delivers even sportier performance, as well as 19-inch low-profile tires that push short, sharp bumps into the interior of the carriageway more often than we would like (but still less than we remember from the previous generation.). If you're a fan of accentuated comfort, stick with higher cross-section tires and smaller rims and the problem will be solved (or even ditch the S line sports chassis).

However, due to all this, of course, the steering is more precise, but at the same time does not give a feeling of nervousness - in fact, such a Q3, when it comes to steering precision, prefers the chassis to more dynamic maneuvers. and position on the road, among the best crossovers in general.

Of course, modern cars are defined by electronics as much as mechanics. We have already written that the infotainment system is excellent, and the same goes for other assistance systems (safety and comfort systems) belonging to the Q3. The lane keeping system works great, of course, such a Q3 brakes reliably automatically in an emergency, but it's true that you need a little more expectation from active cruise control, especially when it's set to follow at the smallest distance possible. Then he brakes late and too abruptly - just because the distance should be shorter does not mean that it cannot be covered moderately and smoothly. Well, it works well in the city crowd.

The lights are LED and with matrix technology, which means they are top notch.... Road lighting is also excellent when driving in oncoming cars, as we are used to matrix LED headlights (and it goes very far), and longer night journeys on local roads are much less tiring than they would be. This is definitely one of the surcharges you should be able to afford when purchasing the Q3, as are the fully digital meters. Electric trunk opening with a gesture under the rear bumper? Convenient (but not required), but the same goes for Bang & Olufsn audio systemA: It's nice to have it because it has good sound for its money, but it's not necessary (according to the Audi audio system).

But at Audi we are already used to all this: engineers create a technically flawless car, and sellers collect packages and surcharges in such a way that it is mainly interesting for buyers, but requires a sharp increase in surcharges. Therefore, in the end, the figure can be significantly higher than the base price. In the third quarter of testing, it grew from 3 to 33 thousand - but it's nice that the customer has a choice.... It is easy to equip the Q3 with half this magnification.

Overall rating (449/600)

  • The Q3 is no longer just a sleek little urban SUV, it has evolved into an everyday family car. Even with front-wheel drive, it's a real Q

  • Cab and trunk (82/110)

The Q3 has grown enough with the new generation to be family-friendly in both the trunk and the rear seats.

  • Comfort (84

    / 115)

Soundproofing is adequate, but a fairly quiet gasoline engine also helps. The infotainment system is excellent

  • Transmission (60

    / 80)

The petrol engine turns out to be powerful enough without being too thirsty, and paired with it, the automatic transmission is a great choice.

  • Driving performance (79

    / 100)

The S Line also means sportier and therefore less comfort, as well as a more advantageous chassis with a better position on the road.

  • Security (97/115)

The LED lights are great, and since there were enough safety accessories on the list of accessories, the Q3 performed well in this category.

  • Economy and environment (47

    / 80)

Fuel consumption is acceptable, and the price, of course, corresponds to the brand and the number of accessories. There are no miracles here

Driving pleasure: 3/5

  • If I had four-wheel drive, I would get an even higher rating.
