Test: Audi Q8 50 TDI quattro // Looking into the future

In the foreground, of course, are cross-versions. They still sell like hot cakes to this day, so a car that flirts even a little with this class is more than guaranteed success. It is true that the price of a car also plays a role in this, but the more expensive it is, the fewer customers are needed to make the car successful. Some buyers even wish they didn't have many like-minded people, which of course adds to the exclusivity of their steel horse. Claiming that the Audi Q8 will be an exclusive model is probably reckless, but it's certainly reasonable to expect it to be used by those buyers who want a different, not quite ordinary car. Of course, some will even like the fact that the car is far from affordable.

The fact that we are talking about writing about an interesting, great car can already be inferred from the DNA record of Audi. This hints that the Q8 combines the elegance of a four-door coupe (the Germans mean the luxury model A7) and, on the other hand, the practical versatility of a large sports crossover. Audi has a lot of the latter, and since one is more successful than the other, the backbone for the Q8 is really great too. As the cherry on top, Audi adds that the Q8 should flirt with their legendary Audi quattro. Is it then hard to believe that the machine will be successful?

And if your view of the price of a test car is clouding your mind and at the same time raises the question of the substances under which the author wrote this article, let me say it again - I do not count among the expensive cars any car that is more expensive than the cheapest. Or, in other words: we need to compare the cost of a car in a class and between competing models, where some are cheaper and others are more expensive. However, the fact that most of such a car cannot afford it is by no means a reason to condemn the car as being too expensive. Just because it's not available doesn't mean it's too expensive. You know, yours to yours.

And if I go back to Q8. For many potential owners, valuing a car against their beliefs is a blasphemous act. However, it should be borne in mind that luxury and high price have not yet overcome the laws of physics and, say, will not overcome, at least in the near future. This, of course, means that I can write in good conscience that the car is clumsy in certain situations and that I would like the steering wheel to turn more easily in a smooth ride. But again, we shouldn't be mixing apples and pears, so keep in mind that the Q8 is a two-ton-plus mass that handles differently than a sports coupe. It can be blamed for its clumsiness compared to conventional cars, and it will be difficult to criticize it anywhere among its peers. It should be noted that Audi continues to use lightweight materials (especially aluminum), and the Q8 is much lighter than it could be. If I add in four-wheel steering and all-wheel drive, the car's agility is actually above average for its class. And if I mention the eight-speed automatic transmission, it is clear that the driver will surely like it. Also because the gearbox seems to understand the Q8 much better than, for example, the A7, where, with the same engine configuration, at times it rattles quite uncomfortably. The latter is practically non-existent when starting from the Q8, but of course it depends on which driving program we are driving. The dynamics certainly contribute to a less pleasant ride, since the main task of this program is to make the car as stable as possible and therefore, of course, attack the road with a stiffer suspension. Like most systems, the Auto Q8 is the most versatile. The Eco program is also not unpleasant, for those who have already come to terms with the start-stop system, it is good that the engine stalls when stopped much earlier than when the car actually stops.

The Q8 test suggested a few sweets for safety, but they are more than unknown and there really is no point in listing them again. Of note, the lane keeping monitoring system works just as well as in the A7, so I did not disable it in the Q8 either. However, I believe this can be a distraction for many, as pointers must be used. But a mitigating circumstance is at least the fact that I am writing about Audi, and not about any other prestigious brand.

Even the rest of the test Q8 felt good. And not only for the driver, but also for the passengers. Here they create their own virtual cockpit and dual touchscreens in the center console. The seats in the test car were also above average, which is what such a car should be.

Although the car looks intimidatingly large, it is much shorter than its Q7 big brother, but of course wider and lower, giving it an aggressive look. However, this is not the only plus - it is more stable due to wider tracks. As a result, unlike some competitors, it doesn't bounce around fast corners, but sticks to the road like a train of rails. However, it is important to know that if you overdo it, the train can also slip off the rails. Therefore, the car, and therefore the driver and passengers, feel best in it on the track. Driving speeds can be above average, as the 286-litre turbodiesel engine, which offers 245 "horsepower", accelerates the car to 8 kilometers per hour, and when you consider that the Q100 accelerates from standstill to 6,3 kilometers per hour in just 605 seconds You can see that he is a true traveler. If you're worried about where to go due to the shape of the luggage compartment, it's not necessary - XNUMX liters of luggage space is enough, but if someone needs more, a longitudinally movable and folding rear bench can help.

While you might think the Audi Q8 is just another answer to competitor models, it seems to have been designed carefully and thoughtfully enough to be used by anyone who enjoys the car, and not just because it will be in front of the car. neighbour.
