Test: Citroën Berlingo 1.5 HDi Shine XTR // First of three

This year, for example, the Berlingo (we're talking passenger, not cargo, of course) sold nearly double the Caddy and nearly ten times its sister Peugeot Partners.

So Berlingo is the first. What about "out of three"? Previously, he was "out of two", since he shared the technique and almost everything with the mentioned Partner, except for a few shortcuts. But recently the French group PSA also owns Opel, and Berlingo and Partner have a third brother: the Opel Combo.

How PSA will finally "wind down" the offer of all three, that everything will be at least approximately logical and that none of the models will be left out, will become clear when we also know how the equipment and prices of the Combo are in our country , the differences between them, however, are already clear Berlingo and Partner: Berlingo is more lively in form (especially outside, but also inside), has poorer interior equipment (raised center consoles, for example, it does not), classic steering wheel and sensors ( unlike the Peugeot i-Cockpit), its belly is a little closer to the ground than the Partner's (15 millimeters), and the driving feel is a little more “economical” due to the larger steering wheel and generally a little “harder” feel.

But this, of course, does not mean that such a Berlingo is a cargo van in which emergency rear seats are installed. On the contrary: compared to its predecessor, which was already quite far from commercial vehicles, the new Berlingo is even more civilized, the materials are slightly better, but still incomparable with the materials of some C4 Cactus, it sits very well, the whole design, especially if you think about optional XTR packages (with different plastic colors inside, different seat textiles and bright body accessories), this is a dynamic family - and very fresh. This is a good thousand extra, which greatly improves the character of the car. The same goes for the extra charge for the full package of parking sensors that protect the sides of the car, and quite the opposite for the extra charge for Tom Tom navigation. According to TomTom, this is usually not the highest quality and is in fact completely redundant, as an RCCA2 infotainment system with decent smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay and AndroidAuto is already standard. Because Apple also allows Google Maps to be used in CarPlay, the vast majority of built-in navigation aids (which are getting cheaper) are not only unnecessary, but outdated. In short, these 680 euros of surcharges could have been safely saved. The projection screen, which is standard on Shine equipment and which outweighs the otherwise slightly opaque analog speedometer found on the Berlingo, is welcome. Among the sensors there is a fairly large LCD screen designed to display data from the trip computer and infotainment system.

The front feel is pleasant, save for the missing center console between the front seats (and associated storage space). The driving position should also be suitable for taller drivers (somewhere from 190 centimeters there may be a desire for a slightly larger longitudinal movement of the driver's seat towards the rear), but of course there is enough space in the space. rear. There are three separate seats, which means this Berlingo is versatile enough. This is the essence of such cars: not only spaciousness (which this Berlingo has in abundance, as it has grown from its predecessor), but also that it can, at will, transform from (almost) a family sedan to (almost) a cargo one. van.

To make the interior pleasant, a few more additions were added. The Modutop system is already known from the previous generation, but for the new Berlingo it has been completely redesigned. This, of course, is a system of boxes under the roof of the car (above the entire interior - but if before it was only hard plastic boxes, now it is a combination of a glass panoramic roof, a translucent shelf with LED lighting at night and piles of boxes. In addition, it looks attractive, and the interior of the Berlingo with this standard Shine equipment accessory takes on new dimensions. The equipment, if you choose the Shine version, is rich: from a good infotainment system, a system with the necessary connectivity features, efficient dual-zone air conditioning, daytime LED headlights, cruise control and limiter speed for smart key and parking sensors.

In Berling, passengers are well cared for, with the exception of the lack of a center console between the front seats, and a variety of luggage (even when it comes to skis, surfboards or washing machines), but what about driving?

The new 1,5-liter diesel does not disappoint. It is noticeably quieter than its predecessor (not only because it is a new modern engine, but also because the sound insulation of the new Berlingo is noticeably better than its predecessor), more advanced, with its power of 96 or 130 kW. "horsepower" and also powerful enough to move the Berlinga fast enough at highway speeds (there's a fair amount of frontal area to be aware of) and when the car is loaded. Of course, you would survive with the weaker version, but the stronger version is not so expensive that you seriously consider buying it - especially since there will be almost no difference in consumption (except for the calmest drivers), because even in the more powerful version this 1,5, The XNUMX-liter turbodiesel is a very discreet variety.

We attributed a small negative to the Berlingo, because the movement of the shift lever could be more precise and less chatty, and the clutch pedal could also be softer. Both are eliminated by a simple solution: paying extra for an automatic transmission. In general, the pedals and steering wheel are the part of the car that best showcases the origins of the Berlingo. It's the same with the handlebars and the pedals: there's nothing wrong with being lighter, but also a bit smaller.

Off-road position - a car like the Berlingo is certainly somewhere at the bottom of the list when it comes to buying, but the comfort offered by the chassis is very important. Here Berlingo is one of the most comfortable, but not the best. Depending on the type of vehicle, cornering lean is slight, but we would like (especially when it comes to the rear axle) to dampen short, sharp bumps like prefabricated speed barriers better. Passengers, especially in the rear (unless the vehicle is heavily loaded), may be surprised by more push from under the wheels under these conditions.

But in all honesty, such behavior, given what kind of car it is, is quite expected. Those who want a more refined car will simply resort to a minivan or crossover – with all the disadvantages in terms of price and space that such a move brings. However, those who know what they want and why this “family van” suits them will also be aware of the disadvantages of such a design and will be ready to put up with them. And when we look at Berlingo through their eyes, this is a very good product that will have the most (or even the only) competition among home "brothers".

Overall rating (406/600)

  • This Berlingo can be (even for those looking for a visually appealing vehicle) a great family choice.

  • Cab and trunk (85/110)

Plenty of room, but overlooked more practical details and useful storage space.

  • Comfort (77

    / 115)

Plenty of room, but overlooked more practical details and useful storage space. Not too much noise, the infotainment system is good, only the plastic of the dashboard is not impressive

  • Transmission (58

    / 80)

The more powerful diesel is powerful enough, and the six-speed gearbox could have smoother movements.

  • Driving performance (66

    / 100)

The chassis could be more comfortably adjusted to the shade (especially at the rear).

  • Security (69/115)

Only four stars on the EuroNCAP test lowered the rating here

  • Economy and environment (51

    / 80)

Consumption is in the black, so is the price.

Driving pleasure: 1/5

  • Berlingo is just a family salon, and it's hard to talk about driving pleasure here.

We praise and reproach

open space

modutop

there is no center console between the seats, so there is not enough useful storage space

large lift-up rear doors can be impractical in garages (solved by opening the rear window separately)
