Test: Citroen DS4 1.6 THP (147 kW) Sport Chic

Single, coupe, SUV?

With the DS4, Citroën wants to attract customers looking for a car. lower middle classbut they have different needs than those preparing for a similar proposal called the Citroën C4. More sporty and with a slightly raised body, with a seat like an SUV, in a coupe style – this is how Citroën describes the DS4.

Judging by the fresh exterior, many buyers will be delighted with the new DS4. We can say that you can find quite a few very similar cars in terms of design, but the exterior of the Citroën DS4 gives the impression that we are looking at some kind of product. premium brands... The designers managed to hide the roots of DS4 quite well.

Likewise, he reveals the interior, which also clearly shows the desire to offer more than Citroën customers have so far been accustomed to. They are possible different color combinations dashboards and linings (doors and seats) and everything that only belongs to them - in our test model, a dark, almost completely black color prevailed. The leather seats certainly contribute to the to a noble impression, the final production of the interior deserves praise. Even when it comes to the usability of Citroën's buttons and switches, the experience is good.

Ergonomics seemed to the designers of Citroën extremely important, so I can say that there are no comments here. It only causes a little confusion. two rotary knobs on the part of control for radio, navigation, telephone and other functions, as while driving, the driver must pay more attention to driving than the road, so as not to disturb and turn off the radio instead of confirming the next system request.

A clumsy hook and behind forever closed windows at the back door

We can't blame the seats for anything, the free back seat space is also satisfactory, although the three of them won't enjoy the longer ride. It will be harder to adapt to Citroëns' somewhat bold decision on how they designed the rear side doors. In an effort to make the exterior look as coupé-like as possible, they neglect of usability this part of the car.

that way to open the door (outside the hook is hidden in the place where the rear window frame is located) is dangerous for longer (especially female) nails. It also turns out that the DS4 user has to completely abandon the option open windows on the rear side doors. For effective ventilation while driving, this is definitely not welcome.

Citroën's designers also found it very important to get into the roof. windshield (a similar idea is implemented in the C3), which for the driver and front passenger increases forward and upward visibility, but on hot summer days it turned out that this detail allows even more stronger heating inside. Efficiency automatic air conditioners this cannot be disputed, but when driving around town, it has to work several times harder to prepare a suitable environment for a comfortable ride.

The luggage space in the new DS4 is ample. big enoughmeasured by its lower middle class competitors, but certainly not designed to carry an excessive amount of luggage. We can easily increase the space with partial or complete switching rear seat backrests, which also reduces the ability to carry more passengers, but in this respect the DS4 is no different from other competitors in terms of usability.

The engine is the result of a collaboration between PSA and BMW.

At the heart of the DS4 we tested was a powerful engine. Kar 200 'horse' capable of a 1,6-liter turbo petrol engine with the additional designation THP. It is an engine created from a collaboration between Citroën parent company PSA and Bavarian BMW, and in this regard, engineers should be grateful for their training. convincing product... Of course, the maximum power data speaks for itself, but in terms of torque, the engine is on the right side, since 275 newton meters available in a very wide rpm range (1.700 to 4.500).

There is no nervous and fast shifting in relation to the precise gear lever, the power is more than enough in all driving conditions ... Despite the possibilities, the new engine can also humble (of course, with a light touch on the gas), so that the driver will be more or less "on his feet" as he drives - economically or wastefully.

The chassis met the requirements of a powerful engine in all respects and also contributed to the impression. safe places on the road, the same in all road conditions feeling of comfort... Only on badly potholed (unfortunately, more and more often) patched Slovenian roads are things worse, but there is no effective assistance here due to the large bikes (and their prolonged exterior effect).

DS4 also turns out with full equipment (especially in the Sport Chic version), where only a few of them could be added to the wishlist. However, I'm not sure if all the price ramifications of the new Citroën DS4 will get unlimited consumer approval. The DS4's price tag is quite high. rises above average expectations of buyers of this brand (as well as many others, including a signed author).

Competition?

In the company of competitors such as the Ford Kuga 2,5 T, Mini John Cooper Works, Peugeot 3008 1,6 THP, Renault Mégane Coupe 2,0T, Volkswagen Golf GTI or Volvo C30 T5 Kinetic, the DS4 will not be as successful as the one which has the best price considering what it offers. Thus, it can be said that only time will tell whether the novelty in Citroën's offer will really convince buyers enough, or, due to insufficient demand, the French brand will have to resort to a tried and tested method of stimulating sales - discounts.

Overall rating (345/420)

  • Citroen gave the DS4 a noble best buy role, but the investment is more dubious, at least for now, than peers due to the brand's not-so-good reputation.

    premium cars.

  • Exterior (13/15)

There are quite a few machines with a similar dynamic design, but this one is more planted than the ground.

  • Interior (101/140)

Good position for driver and front passenger, big enough and expandable trunk, but with strange rear side doors.

  • Engine, transmission (54

    / 40)

One of the most powerful 1,6-liter engines that can also be quite economical and the chassis is good for the job.

  • Driving performance (62

    / 95)

Good road position with poor steering response.

  • Performance (33/35)

Already too powerful for the current automotive moment, but quite manageable.

  • Security (40/45)

Active and passive safety is ideal.

  • Economy (42/50)

Given the high purchase price of the purchase, it is not the head, but the heart that is in command.
