Test: Fiat 500X City Look 1.6 Multijet 16V Lounge

We got the first announcement of what the Fiat 500X might look like even before we got behind the wheel. Before that, we thoroughly tested the Jeep Renegade, which, as a result of cooperation between Fiat and Chrysler, was the first to hit the assembly line. Jeep, which as a brand vows not to disappoint off-road, couldn't let its new model go the other way. Based on this logic, it was assumed that the new 500X under the body, painted by the Italian designer in skinny pants, pointed shoes and red-rimmed glasses, would also carry a set of much more serious tech than the 500L. It should be added that Fiat has chosen to name its entire lineup the 500 number, except that a label will be added next to the number.

In this case, when buyers around the world were enthusiastic about small crossovers, and car factories reacted accordingly, it was time for Fiat to offer its representative in this segment - the 500X model. While not quite a baby at 4.273 millimeters, it will remind you of both its legendary predecessor and the current 500 due to the similarity in design. Attributes also need to be looked for elsewhere. The new 500X will instantly impress you - as is typical for all crossovers - with ease of entry and exit, transparency, spaciousness and ease of use. Tall people will be able to fit their centimeters in front, but at the same time, they will not fade in the back due to tightness.

The extended seating seats are more like comfortable chairs in front of TV screens, but at the same time have enough lateral support to keep the live weight in place when cornering. The instrument panel remains recognizable by Fiat, especially its upper part is covered with plastic in the same color as the body. The steering wheel remains recognizable as well, and the gauges are new, centered on a 3,5-inch digital aperture. Unlike the 500L, the X has several useful drawers looted, and the drink holder thus serves as the most useful storage for small items. The USB plug is given a bit of an awkward spot as it's tucked right in front of the shift lever and it can happen that your knuckles on your arm meet the USB dongle. As expected, on top of the dashboard is the now well-known Fiat Uconnect multimedia system with a 6,5-inch touchscreen, which combines a navigation system, a music media player and a set of applications connected to the Internet.

Since the story needs to be complicated, it should be said that the 500X comes in two versions. Since it's not enough for some that the car offers them the basic benefits of soft SUVs, an all-wheel-drive version is available with an off-road equipment package. For everyone else, there's a softer version with all-wheel drive and the City Look package. Our five hundred were also equipped in this way. Although her original task is to overcome curbs, swallow the vibrations of granite blocks and sewer shafts, a trip to less demanding off-road conditions will not scare her. It will be even easier if we use the Mood Selector to select a specific program that will tailor the selected tasks to the engine electronics, throttle response and ESP system operation. Here we also have to commend the vastly improved servo mechanism, which provides much more communicative control than we've been used to so far at Fiat. The test 500X was powered by a 1,6-horsepower 120-liter turbodiesel that sent power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.

The number already mentioned prepares us not to expect Huron acceleration and light speeds, but the engine has definitely convinced us of good agility, smooth ride, quiet operation and low consumption. The drivetrain is also reasonably accurate, the gear ratios are well calculated, and the lever movements are short and predictable. With the 500X, Fiat has positioned itself in the premium crossover class, as the 500 brand's core mentality is based on sophistication, stylistic sophistication and an Italian take on beauty. However, since this is not a good enough excuse to charge a higher price, it is obvious that such a 500X already comes with a rich set of equipment. The new crossover is certainly a bright spot on Fiat's offering, and early public and positive feedback indicates the brand is on the right track to gain much-coveted acceptance among premium model suppliers. Interestingly, the 500X SUV is taking them off-road on the right track.

Overall rating (346/420)

  • The trend-driven crossover, in addition to embodying Italian styling, now also has a much better technical package under the body.
  • Exterior (14/15)

Even the Fiat crossover did not escape sympathy and connection with the appearance of the legendary five hundred.

  • Interior (108/140)

Surprisingly good workmanship, quality materials and a double bottom boot earn extra points.

  • Engine, transmission (56/40)

The elegant engine is combined with the chassis and drivetrain, which also impresses off-road.

  • Driving performance (59/95)

The improved technical design gives a much better driving experience and position on the road.

  • Performance (24/35)

An entry-level turbo diesel satisfies the need for propulsion, but it's not really a supercar.

  • Security (38/45)

Although the "brother" Renegade received five stars in ADAC tests, the 500X received only four due to the absence of an automatic braking system as standard equipment.

  • Economy (47/50)

Low fuel costs, good warranty conditions, but unfortunately the brand's history takes a tax on value loss.
